Among Song Sergeant's unique features, it will choose the best name from inconsistent artists and album titles, will carefully replace instances of unkept songs in playlists with the ones that are kept, preserves "Last Played" dates, and merges play counts. Sensible preset settings which will please most users, but power users can precisely control what is considered a duplicate and what song information and audio data to prefer, either by changing Song Sergeant's rules or by manually selecting what they want to keep. Song Sergeant ReviewJust what I've been looking for! - Version: 1.0.2, 9/22/2009 10:11AM PST

Ken Gruberman
I have over 15,000 songs in my library, and since the iTunes Plus Upgrade debacle I've been left with hidden duplicates by the dozen. That means there are duplicates in my library but iTunes' "Show Duplicates" function can't find them. Worse, I've suspected that I had 'orphans' in my iTunes music folder that were not actually listed in iTunes itself. And — thanks to Song Sergeant — it turns out I was right.

SS is the iTunes utility I've always wanted: it can find REAL duplicates and even replace the kept versions in playlists! That's worth the $20 alone IMHO. It also finds naming inconsistencies, which is also wonderful because it's something I do care about. (I tend to be rather … um … picky about how my library is organized, as I am a music professional.) And it found dozens of orphaned files that had been supposedly deleted out of iTunes years ago but were still lurking in the actual iTunes Music folder. Go figure.

The software is well-written, works as advertised, and is worth the money. In truth, I don't know if there is any other software that does what SS does, so I can't compare it if that is the case. All I *do* know is that it works, and it was a pleasure to use. Bravo to whomever came up with this!
