As to what the previous poster very validly took issue with, the developer did acknowledge that his approach was inappropriate and removed the offending code (see the same MacUpdate thread linked to in the the previous post--you'll have to go back a little for the related comments and developer's statement). I've been using Ecoute for a few months, and I greatly prefer it over iTunes for listening to my music due to its lightweight construction and stability. I also quite like some of its features like automatic retrieval of album art and lyrics, global hotkeys, and desktop/menu bar controllers.
This app uses nasty tricks that can compromise other apps

I liked this app a lot, and I was just about to send the developer the $10 shareware fee when I ran across the thread at MacUpdate.com that reveals one of the dastardly ways this developer tries to thwart pirates (an admirable goal, but such methods go too too far): http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/31817/ecoute.
Now, instead of paying the shareware fee, I have just deleted the app from my system, and from now on I'll be telling all my friends and students about the crazy developer who thinks the ends justify the means in the epic fight against software piracy. S/he is so obsessed with piracy that s/he built a kind of super-aggressive spyware into Ecoute that WATCHES YOUR WHOLE SYSTEM for certain filetypes that could be used to disable Ecoute's piracy protections, but they also could delete parts of other UNRELATED apps just to ensure that Ecoute is not compromised! I want nothing to do with such crap.
However, I'll keep and eye on this developer just in case s/he ever stops hanging out with his/her MIAA buddies, s/he pulls the stick out, and s/he determines that such tactics are not only counterproductive but also unethical!

This is a program I've been looking for for quite some time. A lightweight music player which allows access to your iTunes library without loading up iTunes which has become quite bloated with all the different features.
I have used CoverSutra before but the I did not like because you had to run iTunes and Coversutra. Ecoute however, is running without iTunes and even places a small icon for control of playback on your desktop. Ecoute worked fine with my iTunes library and there were no problems in playback or in regards of the app itself.
