plugged the usb cable (which came with the pre) into my mac and fired up the missing sync. hmmm. they're talking about a common wifi network, and internet access... reconnect my usb evdo dongle and browse on over to their site (again) and look more closely at the "sync requirements".
"Contact and Calendar plugins are synced via wifi only"...
WTF?!?
"File and Media plugins are syunced via USB only"...
...and this detail info is only available post-purchase on the self-help forums.
digging back to the public site and promo page, yes it does say in small type "wifi and internet access required for device pairing", but it might as well say "be prepared to eat two gallons of peanut butter" because really, who's checking for that kind of requirement?!? i've got a pre, i've got the usb cable that came with the device, and i've got my mac. so i go buy "missing sync" and unfortunately i'm still missing the sync. because i don't have a wifi network here. i have a laptop with evdo.
i've been had. i've wasted $39. and what galls me the most is that i've enriched a company who lied to me through obfuscation and omission. the "sync" process for the pre is a radical change from what the word has meant for almost two decades and they seem to have gone out of their way to hide that fact.
double-thumbs down.
