HP DeskJet ReviewJust awful - Version: 3.3, 5/27/2007 09:15AM PST

I have an old Deskjet 880C lying around and tried to get a simple plain text file printed out. Sounds easy enough to do, right?

Wrong: the driver recommended by HP doesn't work. The 3.3 download doesn't work.

A complete waste of time. No more HP products for me, thank you very much.

HP DeskJet Usage TipVersion Confusion & Driver "Upgrade" - Version: 3.3, 2/19/2007 12:04PM PST

The version that I downloaded from this link is 2.7.1 (which is not listed in the above "Product Version" menu). HP's site has no reference to v 3.3 and states it no longer provides it's driver directly, saying the latest version is embedded in Tiger.

My experience with the embedded version is reduced functionality, e.g. I cannot find a draft mode. So I deleted the printer queue as instructed and installed 2.7.1 - it works but with same limited functionality. An unintended consequence is that the Tiger-embeded driver can no longer be found in the printer set up utility.

(I've had a lot of value from this printer so I do recommend HP DeskJet. Because the version numbering and transfer to a Tiger embed is screwed up. I give a poor rating to v 3.3)

HP DeskJet ReviewWarning may not work with MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo - Version: 3.3, 11/8/2006 07:32PM PST

DeskJet 880C worked fine with PowerBook G4 and old driver. After spending one hour with apple support, they inform me that the new 3.3 driver from HP does not work correctly with my new MacBook Pro.

Have downloaded (no problem finding it on HPs website) and re-installed and still no joy.

Does anyone know of an alternative driver that will do the job?

HP DeskJet ReviewHP support is worse than useless - Version: 3.3, 10/10/2006 04:12AM PST

Central Scrutinizer--2008
I went to the HP website and looked up the most recent driver for my Deskjet 932 - it listed version 2.7.1. I poked around the website for 20 minutes, and could not find a single mention of this version 3.3 driver.

Like the previous commentator, I tried emailing HP support to get a definitive answer. Surprisingly, within a few days a tech called me, but less surprisingly, he knew nothing other than what the HP website listed, and was unable to put me in touch with anyone more knowledgeable.

In HP's favor, my Deskjet has always worked fine with OS X's native printer support, but then my needs are limited since I don't print high quality graphics or photos. Needless to say, my next printer will be from a manufacturer with true OS X support.

"External Code was not compiled with the current headers!"
Thanks for that tidbit of information HP.

My solemn promise to HP:

Never again will I consider connecting an HP product to my Mac.

HP DeskJet ReviewDrivers work well, HP website/support is awful - Version: 3.3, 10/24/2005 07:31PM PST

Using a Deskjet 932C, I've never had any problems with HP drivers. They do the job, but no more. Managing presets isn't so user-friendly, instead of drop-down menus a new window or drawer would be better. Otherwise I can't complain about the GUI.

The HP website used to be very functional and easy to use, showing the most recent updates for my printer within seconds. HP recently "updated" their site and now it uses a "wizard" to identify the appropriate driver updates, but this wizard wasn't so wise to Macs. After wasting over an hour on HP's website I emailed a formal complaint, and in a few days an HP droid called to tell me that I was using their website wrong since it most certainly supports Macs. He was unable to guide me to driver updates I was seeking over the phone, but he insisted in a quite unfriendly tone that the website was Mac friendly and curtly insinuated that the problem was my skill at navigating the internet. I felt like I'd just criticized the Bush administration and was getting a call from Karl Rove.

I'll never buy an HP printer again, but I can't complain about the actual drivers. They just work. To bad HP's support is so awful.

HP DeskJet Troubleshooting ReportDoesn't remember settings - Version: 3.3, 9/11/2005 09:08AM PST

Does anyone else have this problem?

I open a document; the first time I send it to print I have to re-select my Draft Mode preset, even though the drop-down menu shows that it is selected. If I don't, the page prints at high quality (which takes way too long and uses too much ink).

I often also have to re-select which printer I'm using and the paper size in Page Setup, although I don't always have to do this (but I always have to check!).

This makes for a long process each time I print: no more "Command-P, Enter" Now I have to go through many, many steps. What a pain!

There have been many problems with all the HP mac drivers for my deskjet, but this new version seems to behave the worst. Does anyone have a fix for this? (other than a new non-HP printer).

HP DeskJet ReviewWhat's the story? - Version: 3.3, 9/3/2005 11:58PM PST

Your Reason 4 Living
To all those who have 'trouble' with this software: I suspect you need practive with your computing machines. Over the last year and a half I've installed each update of HP's DeskJet software for use with an old 810c and a 930c. Each time seamless. I first removed the previous version from my Printer list, then installed the new one. And each time the functionality of the driver has remained the same, or improved. When you're having issues with a piece of software that others use without a problem, do you ever consider the problem may well exist with YOUR setup, not just the driver in question?

HP DeskJet ReviewWorks perfectly (at least for me!) - Version: 3.3, 8/12/2005 01:52AM PST

I really do not understand all that harsh criticism concerning lack of quality of this HP DeskJet driver. For me, it has always worked flawlessly with my DJ 970cxi under Mac OS X (up to Tiger). If only every 3rd party device driver were written that well!

HP DeskJet Troubleshooting ReportIf you use InDesign do not install this driver - Version: 3.3, 6/16/2005 07:04AM PST

lmleco
On InDesign when you click on printer in the printing menu, the paper type/quality menu disappeared, so you can't choose if you want a fast draft print or a best print. If you use InDesign do not install this driver.
