HP DeskJet ReviewJust awful - Version: 3.3, 5/27/2007 09:15AM PST

I have an old Deskjet 880C lying around and tried to get a simple plain text file printed out. Sounds easy enough to do, right?

Wrong: the driver recommended by HP doesn't work. The 3.3 download doesn't work.

A complete waste of time. No more HP products for me, thank you very much.

HP DeskJet Usage TipVersion Confusion & Driver "Upgrade" - Version: 3.3, 2/19/2007 12:04PM PST

The version that I downloaded from this link is 2.7.1 (which is not listed in the above "Product Version" menu). HP's site has no reference to v 3.3 and states it no longer provides it's driver directly, saying the latest version is embedded in Tiger.

My experience with the embedded version is reduced functionality, e.g. I cannot find a draft mode. So I deleted the printer queue as instructed and installed 2.7.1 - it works but with same limited functionality. An unintended consequence is that the Tiger-embeded driver can no longer be found in the printer set up utility.

(I've had a lot of value from this printer so I do recommend HP DeskJet. Because the version numbering and transfer to a Tiger embed is screwed up. I give a poor rating to v 3.3)

HP DeskJet ReviewWarning may not work with MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo - Version: 3.3, 11/8/2006 07:32PM PST

DeskJet 880C worked fine with PowerBook G4 and old driver. After spending one hour with apple support, they inform me that the new 3.3 driver from HP does not work correctly with my new MacBook Pro.

Have downloaded (no problem finding it on HPs website) and re-installed and still no joy.

Does anyone know of an alternative driver that will do the job?
