Product Description:

Dock Gone keeps the Mac OS X Dock out of your way so that it will not interrupt your work.

While you can always hide the Dock without Dock Gone, it will reappear whenever you mouse over the edge of the screen, blocking whatever is below the cursor. And you can be sure it will happen at the worst possible time. Dock Gone prevents this by moving the Dock completely out of your way, effectively turning it off until you ask for it back.

More than one way to turn off a Dock:
Dock Gone gives you several ways to turn the Dock off.
  • within the Dock Gone Preference Pane in System Preferences
  • in a menu in the menu bar.
  • using a global keyboard shortcut that you define.

Why turn off the Dock instead of just hiding it?
Since Mac OS X first appeared, users have had a love-hate relationship with the Dock and its auto-hide feature. While it is beautiful and useful, there are times when it just gets in the way. Scrolling long documents, navigating long menus in web browsers, and dragging documents around the screen can all inadvertently trigger the Dock to appear exactly at the wrong time. If you move just a little too close to the edge of the screen, the Dock insists on reasserting itself whether it is wanted or not. This gets old fast. Especially for users who like to get the most out of their screen real-estate, it happens way too often.

What's new in this version:

  • There was an issue where Dock settings could be lost the first time Dock Gone was used to turn the Dock off. This has been fixed.
  • New icon and preference pane layout
  • Dock Gone now uses a segmented control to toggle the Dock on and off
  • Dock Gone is now fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC

Dock Gone ReviewJust one flaw, but a significant one. - Version: 1.0.1, 8/21/2009 10:40AM PST

The good:
All I want is to prevent the hidden dock from popping up and interfering with what I am doing.
This does that perfectly. I can hide/reveal the dock with a shortcut of my choosing.
Support by the author is superb.

The bad:
When either hiding or revealing the dock, ALL minimized windows become un-minimized.
They pop up like zombies, and interfere with what I am doing.
This would be at least 4 out of 5 if it were not for that.

Been thrashing all day for two days with nothing ever showing up anywhere plus no ill effects on 9 DragThing Docks over all 4 screen edges, nor with MaxMenus. Better than even when shrinking and hiding it up under the menu bar in pre-Leopard OSs. Promptly responsive developer.

Dock Gone Commentarymore on KnockOutDock v. DockGone - Version: 1.0b2, 5/5/2009 06:05AM PST

Just tried KNO and the main difference is that DG does the "move the tiny dock location" thing so well. This matters if you have hotcorners. With KOD the presence of its minimized Dock conflicts with that corner (is also 3x longer than DG's - at least on my system). With DG when you mouse to the corner where the Dock might popup the Dock shifts to the opposite corner making the previous corner easily available for hotability.

Still, for the difference between free and $10 ($15 once out of beta), each user must make a decision. Me, I'm opting for DG.
