TM Error Logger CommentaryAdmins only - but why? - Version: 2.04, 10/11/2009 05:23AM PST

Glasgow

I was curious about this utility and decided to give it a quick try out. However, it fell flat on its face before it even got started. I fired it up and got the following alert message:
"Unable to read system.log.
You must be logged in as an Admin to use TM Error Logger."    [ OK ]

Click on [ OK ] and I'm straight back in the Finder.

My day-to-day account is a non-admin account - I spend the majority of my time in it. This error makes the utility un-useable.

In spite of using a non-admin account, I sometimes monitor TimeMachine's activity in Console, without problem. If what the previous comment says about this app simply reading the log file is true, then this would seem to be a nonsense.

Would somebody from Carnation Software care to comment?

TM Error Logger ReviewUseless - Version: 2.03, 7/2/2009 07:48AM PST

This app just shows the system.log as the Console does when the word "backup" is typed in the search box. Sorry but it's useless in my humble opinion.

The tested PPC version is also really sluggish…

TM Error Logger ReviewHandy little app - Version: 2.03, 6/6/2009 01:51PM PST

While it doesn't do anything that even a moderately knowledgeable user cannot do on their own, I find this little app to be a handy and helpful shortcut.

TM Error Logger ReviewSimple app for console-phobic types - Version: 2.0, 4/19/2009 10:28PM PST

I love the console (and have also hacked one of my Macs to display the syslog on my desktop) but for many of my clients, the console and backupd logs are a mystery best avoided. This app makes it easy to see why TM bailed on a backup without having to filter on backupd entries in the console.

This app is mostly harmless.

I do have some cautions on changing the TM interval though. Generally hourly backups are painless. The system keeps track of what needs to be backed up via filesystem events and the standard period of backup events is a good compromise to keep each backup load fairly light.

Extending this period has the downside of

  • making the backup load higher
  • reducing the ability to get back a file that you changed only a few hours earlier
  • increasing the likelihood of the dreaded Time Machine requires deep traversal when the FSevents are corrupted or out of sync with the last backup.

TM Error Logger ReviewUseful Little App - Version: 1.1, 2/17/2009 12:49PM PST

To counter some earlier reviews this version features drag and drop installation and does not have to be in the /Applications directory. While the UI is not the most elegant or glitzy I have seen it is very functional and does exactly what it purports to do. It searches the log files and reports any and all Time Machine errors that have occurred today or yesterday. Even better it contains a listing of the error numbers and their meanings so you can better interpret errors that occur. That feature can be useful as a stand-alone.

I haven't had any TM errors to check out the Open Problem Folder feature so I cannot comment on that. All in all a usable little tool that I will recommend to my friends if they are concerned about the occasional Time Machine error that occurs on their system and IMHO well worth more than the modest 99¢ that is suggested if you donate through Google checkout. Paypal is also accepted.

... for listening and acting promptly to rectify the problem. You could, probably, improve the interface using the developer's application Interface Builder.

Many thanks for this useful product. The application would not need to stay inside the folder if you could put these files into the application bundle's Resources folder, thus making one item.

TM Error Logger ReviewGreat idea... - Version: 1.0, 2/1/2009 05:50PM PST

...but atrocious implementation and distribution, from the read/write disk image, to the needless, improperly-built installer packages, to the non-relocatable application, to the needless, nonstandard, cleartext password entry field (there are many better ways to query the ASL database), to the interface that looks like an escapee from System 7.

It's a good thing the "Donate" button image doesn't even draw on my machine, because there's no way I'd pay any money for this. To the developer: please learn about Mac OS X.
