mwwolfgramI love the console (and have also hacked one of my Macs to display the syslog on my desktop) but for many of my clients, the console and backupd logs are a mystery best avoided. This app makes it easy to see why TM bailed on a backup without having to filter on backupd entries in the console.
This app is mostly harmless.
I do have some cautions on changing the TM interval though. Generally hourly backups are painless. The system keeps track of what needs to be backed up via filesystem events and the standard period of backup events is a good compromise to keep each backup load fairly light.
Extending this period has the downside of
- making the backup load higher
- reducing the ability to get back a file that you changed only a few hours earlier
- increasing the likelihood of the dreaded Time Machine requires deep traversal when the FSevents are corrupted or out of sync with the last backup.
Useful Little App

joemikebI haven't had any TM errors to check out the Open Problem Folder feature so I cannot comment on that. All in all a usable little tool that I will recommend to my friends if they are concerned about the occasional Time Machine error that occurs on their system and IMHO well worth more than the modest 99¢ that is suggested if you donate through Google checkout. Paypal is also accepted.
Thank you even more!!! - Version: 1.1, 2/16/2009 03:58PM PST

(n/a)It's a good thing the "Donate" button image doesn't even draw on my machine, because there's no way I'd pay any money for this. To the developer: please learn about Mac OS X.

I was curious about this utility and decided to give it a quick try out. However, it fell flat on its face before it even got started. I fired it up and got the following alert message:
"Unable to read system.log.
You must be logged in as an Admin to use TM Error Logger."Â Â [Â OKÂ ]
Click on [Â OKÂ ] and I'm straight back in the Finder.
My day-to-day account is a non-admin account - I spend the majority of my time in it. This error makes the utility un-useable.
In spite of using a non-admin account, I sometimes monitor TimeMachine's activity in Console, without problem. If what the previous comment says about this app simply reading the log file is true, then this would seem to be a nonsense.
Would somebody from Carnation Software care to comment?
