Product Description:

GEDitCOM II is a rewritten version of GEDitCOM using Apple's Cocoa environment. It will greatly exceed user-interface features of GEDitCOM. It will retain the philosophy of GEDitCOM to be a customizable genealogy application for editing and viewing GEDCOM genealogy files. Users of GEDitCOM, should find GEDitCOM II easy to use.

What's new in this version:

  • This list only has changes since the last posted beta version (1.0b7)
  • New reports for relatives: Ancestors (or Ahnentafel) and All Relatives (sorted by type of relationship).
  • A new Relationship... menu command to find how any two individuals are related.
  • A new report to check all dates in the file for errors and warnings.
  • Any family tree can be converted to a list report and then exported or printed.
  • A "Restart Tree" command to reload the current tree after individuals have been added or deleted.
  • The "Find Record" search field (in the index window and most lists in dialog sheets) is improved. As you type, the nearest matched full name (if any) is completed with remaining text selected. Typing tab or right arrow moves to start of next word to type more if needed.
  • When records are deleted, any notes attached only to that record will also be deleted. If the notes were attached to other records, they will not be deleted.
  • The search window has been improved with better buttons and more search criteria.
  • When a new GEDCOM file is opened, the Header record is changed to indicate it is now being edited in GEDitCOM II. The previous header information is moved to the Header record's notes in case you need to know the origin of the file.
  • When reports are exported to html files, links to records are removed, because those links would not work in a browser.
  • A new "name parts" function in Apple Script helps in decoding names when you want to output only part of the name to a report.
  • An additional step is taken to locate multimedia files. If all other steps fail, it looks by file name only (i.e., ignoring any path information in the link) and looks in all multimedia library folders.
  • "Open Date Calculator" menu command added
  • Fixed undo command when editing raw GEDCOM source in the source editor field.
  • Fixed update of Source titles in other windows when changed in the Source record.
  • Fixed round-off error in the Age Analysis report
  • Fixed some issues merging GEDCOM files and records (possible conflicts with NOTE records and duplicate links were not always deleted correctly).
  • Fixed problem when pasting text from another application that had carriage returns in the text into multi-line text editing fields (was only noticed with older versions of BBEdit).
  • Fixed a bug in some Multimedia Summary reports (but only occurred in Tiger).
  • Fixed bug importing GEDCOM files with embedded multimedia file links that would leave two _FILE lines in the newly created Multimedia Object records.
  • Fixed bug where importing GEDCOM file with excess blanks around note or source links would create a new note or source.

GEDitCOM II ReviewThe best just got better - Version: 1.0, 7/17/2009 02:40AM PST

GEDitCOM's developer, John Nairn. seeks to provide a genealogy program that is powerful, easy to use, customizable, and that fully supports the GEDCOM Standard. With the first version he succeeded: with GEDitCOM II he has far exceeded the original: it's easier to use, easier to customize, and is also very attractively presented.

I used MacFamily Tree for a while and tried out Reunion and Heredis before settling on the earlier version of GEDitCOM. The others were prettier and had fancier charts but they also had far too many idiosyncrasies, mishandled GEDCOM Standards (creating problems in transferring information to other people), and they were very inflexible: you get what you're given!

You can use GEDitCOM "out of the box", but It took me some time to learn how to tweak its interface to suit the way I want to use it. I expected to jump straight into version II, so I was initially surprised by the differences in customizing it, but after less than two weeks I'm feeling more in control and I have it set up very much to my own liking: no doubt I'll continue to fiddle around at the edges.

This is only the first post-beta release of GEDitCOM II and John Nairn acknowledges that there is still work to be done. I've already got a (short) wish-list, which I'll pass on to him. My comment on the original GEDitCOM, four years ago, was "If you want to create some serious genealogical records and not just set out a short family tree in a pretty pictorial format, then this program must be the best". The best just got a whole lot better.
