Product Description:

GEDitCOM II is a rewritten version of GEDitCOM using Apple's Cocoa environment. It will greatly exceed user-interface features of GEDitCOM. It will retain the philosophy of GEDitCOM to be a customizable genealogy application for editing and viewing GEDCOM genealogy files. Users of GEDitCOM, should find GEDitCOM II easy to use.

What's new in this version:

  • A couple of interface issues were noticed and were fixed. While posting, some new features were added as well:
    • After a "View→Relationship..." search, select any relationship that was found and click the new "Show Chart" button see a chart/report about the two individual's common ancestor including full pedigree lines from each individual to that common ancestor.
    • While viewing notes, sources, multimedia objects, or research logs, two new commands in the "Attach" submenu let you select individual or family records and have them cite the record you are viewing. Previously you had to go to the individual or family record to attach the link.
    • Similarly, you can drag and drop individual and family records on to notes, sources, multimedia objects, or research logs and those records will link to the drop-target record
    • New menu commands in the "Go" submenu let you step through records in the current album being displayed in the index window.
    • The display of multimedia objects in the "Default Format" and the "Pedigree Format" now uses several panes and one will zoom in on the current image. Additionally images can be scaled for preferred display size and other formats updated to look for the scale setting.
    • Marriage Events now also show in the "Events" pane of family records in the "Default Format."
    • Added support for research log records in the "Book Format" and the "Basic Format."
    • Fixed a bug that could cause the data in the current browser record to become disconnected (and therefore seemingly unresponsive to editing, although no data was harmed) if you saved the file while editing.
    • Fixed a bug that could cause a "child" window (e.g., a window with details on an event) to become disconnected from the data in certain rare sequences of actions.
  • Operating System Requirements:

GEDitCOM II ReviewThe best just got better - Version: 1.0, 7/17/2009 02:40AM PST

GEDitCOM's developer, John Nairn. seeks to provide a genealogy program that is powerful, easy to use, customizable, and that fully supports the GEDCOM Standard. With the first version he succeeded: with GEDitCOM II he has far exceeded the original: it's easier to use, easier to customize, and is also very attractively presented.

I used MacFamily Tree for a while and tried out Reunion and Heredis before settling on the earlier version of GEDitCOM. The others were prettier and had fancier charts but they also had far too many idiosyncrasies, mishandled GEDCOM Standards (creating problems in transferring information to other people), and they were very inflexible: you get what you're given!

You can use GEDitCOM "out of the box", but It took me some time to learn how to tweak its interface to suit the way I want to use it. I expected to jump straight into version II, so I was initially surprised by the differences in customizing it, but after less than two weeks I'm feeling more in control and I have it set up very much to my own liking: no doubt I'll continue to fiddle around at the edges.

This is only the first post-beta release of GEDitCOM II and John Nairn acknowledges that there is still work to be done. I've already got a (short) wish-list, which I'll pass on to him. My comment on the original GEDitCOM, four years ago, was "If you want to create some serious genealogical records and not just set out a short family tree in a pretty pictorial format, then this program must be the best". The best just got a whole lot better.
