Product Description:

Experience an ultra-intuitive interface, a reliable architecture and a powerful feature set that provides quick access and control over your fonts. FontExplorer X Pro is also your command center when connected to the new FontExplorer X Server solution. Using FontExplorer X Pro, you're able to control your local library from one location, as well as use and manage all server-based fonts assigned to you. Administrators are able to easily distribute fonts and assign usage rights.

What's new in this version:

Resolved

  • An issue where Unicodes in the kerning dialog were converted to decimal values
  • An issue where some keystroke sequences were being incorrectly displayed in the character preview panel
  • An issue were fonts have not been correctly activated following a restart when working with Network Home Directories
  • An issue where Sets would sporadically disappear after restart when working in a Network Home Directory environment
  • An issue where Fonts defined as permanently activated were occasionally deactivated after a restart
  • An issue where Adobe InDesign CS2/CS3/CS4 would crash when opening documents containing graphic elements (EPS, PDF, etc.) with non-embedded fonts. (resolved with PlugIn update)
  • An issue where FontExplorer X Pro sporadically crashed when removing font suitcases from a System Collection or resolving font conflicts under OS X 10.5.x. This is resolved when the operating system is updated to OS X 10.6
  • An issue with Adobe In-Design CS3/CS4 (resolved with PlugIn update): When typing the name of a font in the font selection field, the previous font name would again appear

Improvements

  • FontExplorer X 2.0.3 is now compatible with Mac OS X 10.6.x (Snow Leopard)
  • Font info now shows the languages supported by the character set of a Font
  • Clean Application Font Caches now also cleans the font cache for QuarkXpress 8

Known issues

  • Mac OSX 10.6/10.6.1 only: Fonts activated in FontExplorer X Pro will not appear in any running application that uses the Apple font panel. The font panel will be updated correctly after the application is quit and restarted
  • Adobe InDesign CS2: When typing the name of a font in the font selection field, the previous font name appears again
  • After upgrading from FontExplorer X version 1.2.3, the permanently activated fonts will be located in the "Activated until Log Out" set. If you wish to keep these fonts permanently activated, click on the set, select all fonts and drag them to the "Activated Permanently" set
  • OS X 10.5.x only: Removing font suitcases from a System Collection may cause FontExplorer X Pro to crash if some of the fonts in the suitcase are not activated. This may also occur when resolving conflicts and the font suitcase is contained in a System Collection
    - Using OS X 10.5.6 - Activate or deactivate the entire suitcase and then remove the suitcase from the collection
    - Using OS X 10.5.7 - Move the fonts you wish to keep to a new System Collection, then delete the System Collection containing the suitcase font

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel

FontExplorer X Pro ReviewBuggy but indispensable - Version: 2.0.2, 9/17/2009 04:42PM PST

Being a graphic designer, having some sort of font management tool is a must for me. I started using FEX back in the free days, and bought it when it went Pro, mainly because I didn't want to start over from scratch, and because I wanted to thank the developers for keeping it free for so long. I was expecting that the program would then grow and get better. I was wrong.

Unfortunately, I've had issues with crashing when trying to delete or remove fonts (it happens about 90% of the time), none of which have been resolved by communicating with the developers. I'm stubborn, so I just relaunch and keep trying until I wipe them out.
Other issues: painstakingly slow to activate/deactivate fonts when you have many in the library (and I have a monstrous load of them), no printing options, doesn't recognize duplicates unless certain information is exactly the same, occasionally all fonts (except system fonts) are deactivated after a crash, and so on. I've also run into some problems using the InDesign plug-in, which I just leave off now.

On the plus side, auto-activation is nice (aside from InDesign issues), it's easy to browse through a preview of all your fonts, and you can view all the font characters and font information.

I've tried so hard to like this for so long, but I'm thinking it will be time to try out other options soon.

I'm not quite sure where or when it was that FontExplorer took a turn for the worse, but it definitely has and this version definitely blows. This application is now officially a pain in the rear to use.

I have installed FontExplorer X Pro on all of our 50 some production computers and it has been running great. No Licensing issues, and full support for CS4. After having several major issues with Suitcase, FontExplorer X Pro has been a much more effective program. The only thing that I wish it could have done is import our old font sets from Fusion.
