BookTracker Developer NoteISBN lookups - Version: 1.3.4, 10/28/2007 07:00PM PST

Bill Keirstead
I am the author of BookTracker.

BookTracker does have the ability to autofill book data after entering an ISBN. The lookup occurs automatically after leaving the ISBN field. This functionality can be enabled or disabled in the preferences, but should be enabled by default. If this functionality is disabled, you can still use the Lookup button that is located at the bottom of the individual book window.

If this is not working on your system, please contact support.

BookTracker CommentaryData entry is tedious - Version: 1.3.4, 10/28/2007 01:18PM PST

I'm sure everyone agrees data entry is tedious, no matter what the program. Would it be possible to tie the program to an ISBN database so you could autofill from the ISBN number? Sure would save time. Just an idea.

I'm so stupid - I just found the default file preference. It's just more proof that this software is great!

BookTracker is unique among all the personal library software programs that I've seen in its ability to track reading habits as well as book ownership. As someone who reads about 150 books a year (including rereads), I needed a program that understood 1) I don't own every book I read 2) I don't read every book I own and 3) I read many books more than once. It's well worth the $10 fee. The custom fields alone are worth the fee - they really make this a flexible and adaptible tool. I'm using the custom fields for categories, reading levels, etc.

I do have a wishlist for future updates.

  1. The group function is nice, but it would be nice to have "smart" groups, in the way that iTunes has "smart" playlists. That is, I wish I could set up some advanced filter that would automatically add all books read in 2005 to my 2005 group. Doing that sorting by hand does get a little tedious.
  2. An advanced search function -- one that allowed filtering by, say, last date read & genre -- would also be a nice add on.
  3. It would be nice to be able to set up a default library, so that one would open automatically when the application launched.
  4. Finally, the process of entering data is always going to be tedious. It would be nice if there was an option to put the custom fields on the main entry page. That way I wouldn't have to click between screens when entering data; I could just tab from field to field.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this product continues to develop!

BookTracker CommentaryOne word only: EXCELLENT - Version: 1.2.1, 11/26/2004 02:02PM PST

The features and advantages in the “official” product description are completely true. This program is now really excellent. I used the former version since more than 1 year, inspite of some missing features, which I suggested to the developer. His reaction had been very quick, professional and efficient, and our mail-discussions have really been extremely positive for my personal case. One example: I live in France, and my books are often written in French or German including “special” letters, signs and accents. No problem for BookTracker anymore!
This new version includes almost all my suggestions. I appreciate especially the import and export abilities, and the real “Mac-look” with its very complete and quick search possibilities.

A big advantage compared to other booklist databases is the ability to customize all labels in the custom view, and to adapt them for different purposes. I created several databases with French labels (books, of course, but also passwords, serial numbers, etc ..).

This version corresponds exactly to my needs. Thank you, Bill (the developer)!

Booktracker does support non-US locales. We currently have a larger base of registered users outside of the US than in the US. If you are having a problem entering non-US text, we may have introduced a new bug. Please contact support if you are having a problem with details on what you are entering and how it is being mishandled. Thanks.

BookTracker ReviewUseless for me - Version: 1.2.0, 11/25/2004 06:08AM PST

Looks good, but useless for non-US users (messes up non-ASCII characters). Lacks front page pic download. - Choose BOOKS (slow, but free) or BOOKPEDIA (cheap).

BookTracker CommentaryAlmost perfect indeed - Version: 1.1.0, 2/20/2004 03:45PM PST

Have been looking for such a program for long time. Easy to use and with almost all needed features. Just 2 adjustments untill perfection for me.
1-add books based on ISBN(-list), makes it much faster to add my collection
2-want to get the names I'm lending books to from the adressbook (otherwise keep on filing new names

But am otherwise impressed.

nearly perfect application for those anal-retentive bibliophiles like myself. You can keep track of everything in your book collection. Not just title and authors, but dates read, where purchased, current values, copyrights... and there are customizable fields that allow you to create your own areas (although I had to go to Wickedly Simple Software's home site to get the current version. To get five stars it needs to make use of its numerical fields in allowing you get totals (how much spent on books) averages (What's the average number of pages in my collection) and percentages (What percent of my collection is poetry? What percent did I pay over $20 for?) The information is there... they just need to add the calculations.
