Atomic Mac ReviewNice periodic table software - Version: 6.2, 8/5/2006 12:12PM PST

Overall Atomic Mac is a pretty nice piece of software. It presents a large amount of data in a convenient way. I actually prefer the interface it provides to other programs like Elements. In particular, I like the way individual element information is presented in Atomic Mac using tabs - the similar display in Elements, with its extensive use of toggles, is incredibly annoying.

There are, of course, some features I'd like to see added, such as the ability to switch some colorings to a logarithmic scale. A display mode showing the properties of two elements side by side would also be useful. The best you can do now is put two property diplsys side by side (which, BTW, I don't believe is possible in Elements). Finally, a UI niggle - I often find myself double-clicking on an element box in the main display, which is interpreted as two clicks, one popping up the property display and the other putting it away. Double click should have the same effect as single click in this context.

I'd also like to see help viewer support, especially since that would be a way to provide detailed definitions of all the element properties the program can display.

Atomic Mac CommentaryNeeds to be refreshed - Version: 6.2, 9/2/2005 01:13AM PST

This software is very comprehensive indeed. But although it was a good app in the old Mac OS 9 days, it does not give a very good user experience in Mac OS X.

I would rather suggest to look at Elements from Digital Science (http://sempai.free.fr)
It's not as comprehensive (yet), but offers a very good interface and very nice functions. Plus it's cheaper.

I have used this app for many years and financed BlackCat for several upgrades. This time I managed to receive an upgrade without paying for it. The brushed aluminium interface is a no no for an App like this. When complex information is to be displayed, it should be displayed in a functional and eye pleasing manner and one that permits the user to immediately grasp the meaning of the colours. Brushed aluminium adds nothing but distraction to the meaning of the interface. The app is comprehensive in its content and is therefore useful if you are lucky enough not to have to upgrade it.

I agree with all posts regarding the upgrade policy. It is not worth it hence although the interfaces are also overdone here are free alternatives:

or just search for Period in version tracker and take your pick

Will not download from either Versiontracker or Black Cat site. Control click on site will download file but will not unstuff without errors. Using Safari and Panther.

I've just AtomicMac for more than a year and like it. Unfortunately I've just learned that Black Cat's upgrade policy sucks. I downloaded 5.8.0 and discovered that it won't work with my license code. It seems that you get free upgrades for only 1 year. After that they want another $25.00!!!!! Who do these guys think they are????? Microsoft???????

I hate to complain about software being updated, but I'm damn sick of these periodic table apps that do nothing but trickle info out of reference books in order to pollute versiontracker, etc.

Atomic Mac ReviewNo. Not worth it. - Version: 5.7.0, 5/19/2003 01:22AM PST

Not worth the download, I reckon. Too expensive, I could just as well look it up in a book or use other software. The UI was also awful, confusing and inefficient.

Yet it still has a nice array of features and information.

Download something else if you are thinking it might be good.
