SilverFast Ai - Umax Developer NoteSilverFast supports most UMAX Scanner under 10.4 - Version: 6.4.4r6, 9/19/2006 12:38AM PST

SilverFast works reliably with most UMAX scanners under Mac OS 10.4 Please note, there are different version of SilverFast ranging from SilverFast SE ($49) thru SilverFast SE Plus and SilverFast Ai up to SilverFast Ai STUDIO.
SilverFast SE Plus and SilverFast Ai STUDIO support the patented Multi-Sampling with Auto-Alignment to get rid of noise and increase dynamic range. http://www.silverfast.com/show/newsletter200608/en.html
This feature alone is worth the upgrade, but each version has also got NegaFix with over 120 different nagtive film profiles. Have a look at the highlights movie to see that you get phenomenal results from your Umax scanner!

Not that SilverFast isn't feature rich and functional, but over $300 for what should be bundled software? Sure, the SE version works fine but we have trouble getting good results without scanning and tweaking for a half hour. Too bad Umax gave up the intuitive ease of use of MagicScan, now we're giving up on Umax. We bought a professional scanner and feel that it is reasonable to expect professional bundled software to use with it. Unfortunately we didn't pay closer attention to Umax's plans for OS X, we definitly would have not bought their product knowing what we now know.

SilverFast Ai - Umax CommentaryUmax + OS X Compatibility - Version: 6.2.1d1, 4/27/2004 01:16PM PST

Unfortunately lots of Umax hardware is just not compatible with the Mac OS X operating system. The 4000U is a perfect example. When the scanner is connected to any OS X machine, even the Apple System Profiler doens't properly recognize it.

When the Apple System Profiler doesn't find a piece of hardware, you can rest assured no other app (including SilverFast) will. Some SCSI models also suffer from not being recognized, to being recognized 6 times on the same scsi bus. All of these problems are caused by low quality hardware in the scanner.

SilverFast Ai - Umax CommentaryThanks for SANE But . . . - Version: 6.2.1d1, 4/26/2004 07:34AM PST

I have a Umax Astra 4000U. Another Scanner Umax abandoned for OSX. The scanner is still current on their website though.

SANE doesn't have drivers for this model though.

I'm stuck because I can't really replace it. It's and 11x14 scanner and no one has a model that can handle that paper size without spending a fortune!

As a video professional I used to recommend UMAX for scanning for video graphics departments. I now actively discourage the same departments from buying UMAX scanners. I hope I've cost tham THOUSANDS of dollars for their BAD customer relations and internal policies.

checkout the SANE project at http://sourceforge.net.
They have drivers for those no supported UMAX scanners.
Its open source that means FREE.

SilverFast Ai - Umax CommentaryUmax 1220u (et al.) - Version: 6.2.1d1, 4/25/2004 10:56PM PST

Neither SilverFast nor VueScan provides, or is able to provide, a driver for certain Umax USB scanners, including the Astra 1220u.

The scanners of this type are not true USB scanners; they have a built-in parallel-to-USB adapter. Therefore the driver is not straightforward.

It is not impossible to produce one, however. Umax could release certain data necessary for third-party developers to do so. Or it could develop a driver itself.

Sadly, it chooses to do neither.

I am no longer a customer of Umax, nor an advocate of their products (and I was both of these things for many years until this bit of customer-relations carelessness -- to put it mildly).

I feel sorry for developers like SilverFast and VueScan because they cop a lot of flak that really should be blasted straight into the face of the Umax management.

Mind you, I tried and was given the runaround not only from one person to the next, but even from one continent to the next.

Next time, it's a HP, or an Epson, or ... Anything but a Umax!
