Product Description:

Camera Bits is pleased to announce its latest version of Photo Mechanic, a must-have digital camera image browser. Photo Mechanic is the answer for professional digital photographers looking for a fast and easy-to-use image browser for digital camera files. Photo Mechanic's innovative batch captioning, renaming, speedy browsing, and Photoshop connectivity features have made it the choice of thousands of photojournalists and professional photographers worldwide. Now Carbonized for native Mac OS X and OS 9 operation, and optimized for use with professional cameras from Nikon, Canon, and Olympus, Photo Mechanic has become the standard tool for digital image browsing.

Photo Mechanic is a standalone image browser that lets you view your digital photos with convenience and speed. Photo Mechanic displays the "thumbnails" of photos on a camera disk or folder in a familiar "contact sheet" display windows. You can quickly rotate, preview, copy, delete, tag, rename, and add caption / keyword (IPTC news record) information to photos both individually and in batches. Photo Mechanic helps you find the best photo amongst several similar shots with its preview display that lets you flip through a group of selected photos at high resolution. Photo Mechanic can then pass the photos you select on to Adobe Photoshop for image retouching.

What's new in this version:

  • Fixed problem with ingesting or copying locked files under Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger).
  • Fixed crashing problem when renaming a root-level item in the Favorites pane.
  • Fixed problem with printing contact sheets containing mixture of aspect ratios causing incorrect layout (e.g. text being drawn over the thumbnails).
  • Fixed another problem viewing some Nikon NEF files that have been created by Nikon Capture Control (i.e. tethered mode).
  • Added check for illegal characters in filenames during Save As operation.

Photo Mechanic CommentaryOkay by me - Version: 4.5.3, 12/12/2007 01:48PM PST

That last comment seemed a bit rude and unnecessary, although the developer has quite clearly listed all of what's new with this version. The developer's product has always been top notch, and I've always had good customer service from them. Back off a little.

the amount of time that photo mechanic 4 saves me in managing my files makes it pay for itself on a weekly basis- it's amazing- in particular the newer raw+jpeg features and email functionality are great, it allows me to instantly email or generate web galleries from low res jpegs while keeping big raw files in the background for printing or editing. and the ability to classify images makes it a snap to pick out the best images to use and come back to them later while keeping the whole take of images together in one folder. love it, love it, love it. I only wish you could customize the html outputs more- right now i still generate my web galleries via photoshop, but as soon as the next version allows totally customized web templates, i'll stop using photoshop altogether...

I am commenting rather than rating since this program is applicable to both professional and amatuer users

As others state the program is fast and user friendly, many of the features are obviously pointed at the professional user who can afford the steep price

For the casual user Picture Arena is much less expensive, equally fast and provides most of the same features, Picture Arena also has a separate dedicated iPhoto browser which can be usefull for the amateur.although picture Arena has a somewhat un-Mac like UI and a bunch of not very usefull editing tools

If you have the bucks Photo Mecanic can not be beat
