Okay by me - Version: 4.5.3, 12/12/2007 01:48PM PST

That last comment seemed a bit rude and unnecessary, although the developer has quite clearly listed all of what's new with this version. The developer's product has always been top notch, and I've always had good customer service from them. Back off a little.

the amount of time that photo mechanic 4 saves me in managing my files makes it pay for itself on a weekly basis- it's amazing- in particular the newer raw+jpeg features and email functionality are great, it allows me to instantly email or generate web galleries from low res jpegs while keeping big raw files in the background for printing or editing. and the ability to classify images makes it a snap to pick out the best images to use and come back to them later while keeping the whole take of images together in one folder. love it, love it, love it. I only wish you could customize the html outputs more- right now i still generate my web galleries via photoshop, but as soon as the next version allows totally customized web templates, i'll stop using photoshop altogether...

I am commenting rather than rating since this program is applicable to both professional and amatuer users
As others state the program is fast and user friendly, many of the features are obviously pointed at the professional user who can afford the steep price
For the casual user Picture Arena is much less expensive, equally fast and provides most of the same features, Picture Arena also has a separate dedicated iPhoto browser which can be usefull for the amateur.although picture Arena has a somewhat un-Mac like UI and a bunch of not very usefull editing tools
If you have the bucks Photo Mecanic can not be beat

I natrally have a few minor tweaks I'd like to see added but this is clearly the best graphics browser available. I unfortunately paid $200. for the Adobe plug-in for RAW files. RAW files are a snap and are so quickly done that this alone is worth the price. The contact sheet display and other features are also quite useful. Certainly any pro (or advanced amateur) should take a look at this application. Well worth the money and even amateur class cameras (on the high end) are now creating RAW files. It will be interesting to see how they deal with RAW files with the new iPhoto. LOTS of apps now handle RAW (as does the Photoshop plug-in) but the time is so extremely slow that many high end amateurs should also consider this app (along with its other features). If you shoot a hundred or so photos daily you'll quickly learn to appreciate Photo Mechanic.
all image-browsers suck..

...this one just sucks less. photo-mechanic does everything an imagebrowser should do. and it's FAST! REALLY FAST! even with my 6MP jpg+raw. it can comine jpg and raw for thumbnail-view: it shows the jpg and for editing it opens the raw. it's my favourite. it's a bit pricy, though. now if camerabits only could tell the versiontrackerusers whats new...

This program is VERY FAST at generating variable-sized thumbnails for many types of images (including RAW files), yet it doesn't save disk-filling previews unless you want it to. Very flexible renaming features. Nice implementation of adding IPTC data using templates and EXIF/IPTC variables. Excellent for copying files from CF cards to laptop or desktop computer. Very simple to use, so I can maximize my time in the field concentrating on capturing images and downloading them quickly, yet with plenty of control over sorting and categorizing. Nice preview size. Highly recommended! Good suport from developer.
4.2 just quit unexpectedly - Version: 4.2, 8/28/2004 09:21AM PST
trustworthy
I upgraded to 4.2 a couple of days ago and just tried it out. I ingested a CF card and the images came in fine. I was viewing the images and clicked on a file to change the file name and Photo Mechanic quit unexpectedly. Anyone else having a problem?

A Nony Mouse
Use Photomechanic to navigate through nested folders and the folder names in the drop open list will lose the folder names. You can get them back by opening the size of the folder window (drag from left to right) but within a few more folders you'll find it happens again. Also: CameraBits, please list SOMEWHERE what you're changing from update to update. Nothing on your website and nothing on VT or included with the download.

You only have to hit the submit button once, not three times to see your posting...I know its exciting, but once is quite sufficient for all of us. Thanks
