Product Description:

APC Tracker 4 is a Cocoa application for UPS devices in a network that powers specifically off Mac OS X and Xserve. It investigates the status of the UPS and will properly shut down the client computer once power gets interrupted. It can also send email status notification and perform other custom actions through user customizable shell scripts.

The revised design enables face-less operation in server configurations, which is essential for the secure deployment of Apple?s Xserve?s, as well as the additional range of Mac Servers.

Client/server architecture permits the simultaneous management of multiple APC Tracker servers and facilitates remote configuration, monitoring and administration within a local network or over even over the Internet.

High protection, effortless manageability and the elimination of risk associated with power failure is assured by APC Tracker.

    Hi,

I would just like to quickly comment on the APC Tracker Software for APC UPS systems.

This software has not been tested by APC and is not officially supported by them. I have tested the Software and have found it sometimes to report errors and loss of communication and due to the unique communication protocols used by APC with their products it would be difficult to work it out.

PCNS 2.00 for MAC OS x is supported up to 10.4.6 at the moment. The version number of 2.0 does not imply it is bihind the windows version of 2.2.1, but was designated 2.0 as it was the first version to support MAC.

Because Apple do not provide APC with pre releases of their OS versions, APC have to wait until a version is released before testing and compatibility, and so will always be a couple of versions behind, unlike with Microsoft Operating Systems, as APC are partners of Microsoft and so get to pretest and support the Software when the OS is released.

On the Networking side, PCNS 2.0 supports the APC web cards AP9617/18/19 with XServes and 10.4.6.

The AP9618/19 cards also provide the Temp and Humidity control also.

Powerchute Personal Edition, although only supporting basic Back UP UPS for home computers and desktop pc's with USB on windows, does provide full support on MAC OS 10.4.6 with APC Smart UPS's either with the APC serial Cable or USB. However, it is found that the MAC's built in Native support is just as good if not better than the Personal Edition. There will not be a supported MAC version of Powerchute Business Edition (The more advanced software) for MAC.

Early next year, Both PCNS and Business Edition will be jointly replaced by a single software for serial and Network support including MAC OS systems, called Powerchute Server Edition.

    cheers

APC Tracker Usage TipUPS is Supported in OS X! - Version: 4.3, 3/8/2006 02:43PM PST

I don't have a network UPS but do have an APS UPS with USB and I can easily go into System Prefs -> Energy Saver, select settings for UPS, click on the UPS tab to Shutdown the computer when: (1) it has been on UPS power for X mins; (2) the time left on UPS power is X mins; and, (3) the UPS power level drops to X minutes. The exact same settings in APC Tracker. Plus I can view the battery level & even show the UPS status in my menu bar (under the Options tab). All natively supported under OS X. (I'm not going to rate it because the software seems to work as advertised, there's just no point in buying this when everything you need is already supported and fully functioning from the get-go in OS X.)

APC Tracker CommentaryShould be free - Version: 4.3, 3/8/2006 11:08AM PST

For what it costs to buy an APC UPS, and for what this does, this product should be free. There is absolutely no justification for charging $130 for this.
