Product Description:

SilverKeeper is an application from LaCie that automates backups to external storage devices like hard drives, and other removable storage devices that have IDE, ATA/ATAPI, SCSI, USB, or FireWire interfaces. Essentially any read/write device that can mount a writeable volume on the Macintosh Desktop can be used with SilverKeeper.

What's new in this version:

  • Re-implemented in X-Code for OS X. No longer uses CarbonLib. No longer compatible with OS 9. Compatible with Intel and PowerPC Macintosh computers. Compatible with OS X 10.3.9, 10.4.x, 10.5.x. For OS 9 users, v1.1.4 will still be available.
  • SilverKeeper now can run in the dock or in the background. SilverKeeper can be minimized. We still recommend that you do not run other applications or use your computer while backups are being performed. There is a preference setting to sound an alert when the backup is complete.
  • Setup wizard added to assist users with common setup tasks. User is prompted to create Backup Sets for entire System, all users, logged-in user.
  • Better support for network shares, drives, and network-attached storage (NAS and Ethernet Disk). Sparse Disk Image can now be used as a Backup destination, in addition to normal volumes mounted on the desktop. SilverKeeper will automatically mount disk images used as Backup destinations.
  • Bootable disk backups for OS X are limited to direct connect USB, FireWire, IDE/ATA or SATA disk drive volumes and must be formatted as Mac OS Extended.
  • The size of the log file has been increased; the max size can now be set by a preference setting. The logs may be saved as text files; there are preferences to determine what information is saved in the log files.
  • A user preference optional setting is available to show backup throughput performance.
  • Exclusion and Delete options can be set. Certain files/folders can be set to "never delete" or to be excluded from a backup.
  • Better file copying and permission management to reduce errors indicated by OS X. OS X errors are from the operating system - these numerical values are detected by SilverKeeper, and reported to the user. SilverKeeper errors are text based - a description is provided for errors within SilverKeeper. An error threshold can be set to terminate backup if error limit is reached before completion.
  • Help menu expanded to include links to the built-in SilverKeeper Help; LaCie homepage; SilverKeeper homepage; and email support link for SilverKeeper. SilverKeeper Help now available as separate PDF document. The email link will automatically capture key information about your setup to help troubleshoot your problem report.

I've been using Silverkeeper since it was new, and am very happy with this newest version. In the past some files in deeply nested folders would not be backed up, but the new version is thorough and graphically well thought out. The GUI now displays what is being back up with file names and icons, and the alert when each volume is finished is helpful. I would recommend this.

Silverkeeper ReviewSilverkeeper 1.1.4 a keeper - Version: 1.1.4, 12/31/2008 04:53PM PST

Straightforward, fast, shows files/folders being updated as they are copied over. Tried Time Machine several times - the idea quite seductive, but execution too touchy - never knew when it was going to fail. My main problem with Silverkeeper 2.0 is that it will not launch on my iMac core solo duo Leopard. But that is OK, since 1.1.4 works well, even though it says it is only for pre-Leopard. Anyway, very fast, even on USB 2.0, though I mostly use Firewire. Definitely faster t than Superduper and other alternatives to Time Machine. SK requires a bit more intervention than Time Machine, but it works once set up without intervention.

Silverkeeper ReviewGood basic app for data backup - Version: 2.0.1, 11/22/2008 05:51PM PST

Before 10.5 and Time Machine, I used SK all the time and it backed up my small company' data files every day automatically. It broke under 10.5, which forced me to use TM, which is better anyway, with its multiple, sequential backups (with SK, you only have the most recent b/u).

Just for kicks, I downloaded this update that works under 10.5, and backed up my Docs folder on my Macbook to a HD on another Mac on my home network. It took a while, but worked fine. The complaints that it doesn't make a bootable b/u - not sure if it's supposed to or not. It works great for data b/u, which I think is its intent, ideal for pre 10.5/TM users, or if you don't like TM.
