HexEdit CommentaryInitial impressions - Version: 2.20, 11/13/2008 06:14PM PST

Punster--2008
I downloaded HexEdit to take a look at it. It may actually end up being a better hex editor than others I've used, but several UI issues stuck out:

1. I selected a file to view that happened to have a long filename. The editor window's title, and the title under the Window menu were both the munged 31-character version of the filename. Curious, I then tried a file whose name contained Asian kanji and kana characters, and it looks like the filename was displayed with a MacRoman encoding. C'mon people: FSRefs, Unicode, etc...

2. How about giving the user a chance to at least choose the display font size, if not which monospace font to use? That might make it easier to read.

3. "File Comparison Options" has hijacked the standard command-comma used for preferences. Why isn't there just a preferences window that lets you set comparison options, color scheme, etc.?

This app still (in version 2.2) idiotically hijacks the opening of disk images away from DiskImageMounter.

You can restore the old association by right-clicking on a dmg file, going down to "open with", picking DiskImageMounter from the list, and pressing "Change all".

If for some reason DiskImageMounter isn't in the list, you can find it under /System/Library/CoreServices

HexEdit Usage TipI fixed the icon problem. - Version: 2.00, 6/4/2007 02:31PM PST

I fixed the application bundle, and now HexEdit icons behave the way they should. (The main problem was that you had type **** assigned and you should have used type *.) I also hooked up the document icons the way they ought to be hooked up. I also polished up the icons. HexEdit icons will only be assigned to proper types of binary or text files now. Other unknown types of files will not ever get HexEdit's icons or "open with" stamped on them anymore.

If you delete all previous installations of HexEdit (you must also empty the trash), and THEN unstuff this archive, it should repair the association problems automatically. It may also help to restart if the problems persist.

PLEASE include my new bundle and my 3 new icons in HexEdit! They fix the problems everyone is complaining about.

Remember, you must delete all compiled HexEdit applications first to fix the problem. Developer: You can incorporate the bundle and icons into your build and it should work from then on. All you have to do is have ONE old compiled version of HexEdit on any drive and the problem will still be there.

I understand that it is a strange thing for me to ask you to remove all other versions of HexEdit from your system, so ask some other people to do it first for you if you want to make sure I know what I'm talking about.

Thank you!
Ben Boldt

HexEdit Commentaryhassles with disk images - Version: 2.00, 2/15/2007 03:51PM PST

Good utility, but it's "creator code" is the same as that of Apple's DiskImageMounter.app, so it tries to take over opening of disk images. I deleted the app from my hard drive, because it became to much of a hassle constantly having to right-click disk images instead of just doublecliking them...

HexEdit Troubleshooting ReportDoesn't support long filenames? - Version: 1.92, 11/19/2005 04:26PM PST

When I open a file with a name longer than 31 characters the name is truncated on the document window title bar. When attempting to save an error occurs "Unable to create file (-48)"

I only wish it was scriptable for batch operations. Other than that it does just what I need it to.

HexEdit Troubleshooting ReportConfusing numbering: 1.92 (3-26-05) vs. 1.92b (4-22-05) - Version: 1.92b, 10/5/2005 08:55PM PST

  • Surprisingly, 1.92 is earlier than 1.92b. The 'b' suffix normally indicates a beta release.
  • In 10.4.2, using 1.92b, I encountered a hex pasting bug that I assume is what was fixed in 1.92. Downgrading from 1.92b to 1.92 fixes that bug, and works fine in Tiger.
So - what really is the latest release?

The download version is 1.92, and there is no new version in the website (SourceForge). :/

To the Developer: The SourceForge pages for OpenPlay and HexEdit both show older versions, not the new Tiger compatible versions. Please update. :)
