StuffIt Expander Troubleshooting Reportinstaller crashes - Version: 2010, 9/29/2009 11:19AM PST

I've used prior versions of StuffIt, both paid and free versions for over 10 years, probably almost 15, and it has always been a valued utility (I was an IT consultant to medical and dental offices for over 10 years). However, there seem to be occasional problems with installation like the one I encountered today.

After downloading, I tried to install, and the installer gets past a couple of screens including the EULA and Read Me but then it quits suddenly with a dialogue box that says:
"Missing Critical Component
Installer help application missing."

Since I'm updating a lot of my software during lunch, I have managed to do a number of update installs thus far, and therefore have no reason to believe that it's my machine...

Unfortunately, I don't have time to diagnose the trouble at this point, so I'll wait for them to "fix" the installer.

...........crash crash crash.........
And then, just for a change of pace.......
........crash..........
........especially when uncompressing multiple files, but sometimes it happens with single files as well. I never had this problem in OS 9.2.2 - it worked beautifully. (now using Mac G4-400, OSX 10.4.11)
StuffIt used to be one of the apps I couldn't live without. Now it's a pain in the drain. I only use it for formats The Unarchiver chokes on (it doesn't seem to like .hqx, for instance). :-PPPPPPP

While Stuffit Deluxe has gotten a lot of bad press everyone has missed the fact that
StuffIt Expander has remained gold over the years. It will expand version of formats (segmented zip files) other free utilities tend to have problems with. If Stuffit Expander can't handle it odds are it is some obscure format that may not even have much a presence even on the PC or the file is corrupted in some manner.

Mikis--2008

I really think more companies should make older versions of their freeware available. If not, they should be replaced with some product that does so.

StuffIt Expander version 12 is available here:

StuffIt Expander Commentarybad reviews? why not wipe them out!!! - Version: 13.0.3, 1/9/2009 12:51PM PST

There has been a lot of public backlash against Stuffit, especially since Smith Micro took over the product. I keep a copy of Expander around to open legacy files but have moved on from the Stuffit format long ago.

What surprised me was finding that all of the feedback has recently been erased from VT on the Stuffit products. I guess CNet is OK with scrubbing user feedback when it reflects poorly on a product from a large company.
