MYOB AccountEdge ReviewOutstanding Product - Version: 2009, 4/16/2009 06:22PM PST

While no off the shelf package will rarely fulfill 100% of a user's needs, AccountEdge is a long running, full featured accounting product by a company who has had a long commitment to the Mac platform. I have used and supported AccountEdge for nearly 20 years and I no of no other company which actually listens to the end user as well. Oh yes, I know you can call support and either wait on hold (busy season) or get the new tech support rep who doesn't have all the answers immediately (at least they speak clear english). But on the whole, this company rocks. They care about the product and even more about the end user. I don't know how they could even stuff much more feature-wise in the box. For the price, there is nothing that comes close to the AccountEdge feature set on the Mac platform. It blows QuickBooks out of the water.

We have been an MYOB user for years. Yes it is an excellent package for small to medium business. You can also let your accountant take the data file and access it from Windows as most accountants are incredibly backward when it comes to Macs. However I did note the blurb above and want to take issue with a couple of things.

1 - Multiuser licence - now NOT supported from MYOB and will not be supported for ???? even if you have a SW paid support package. Their excuse? "Well Mac change their OS so often we just cannot keep up with it any longer." This is from a company which is facing a take over of AU$400m from a US company. I really wonder if they will stay with Mac - funny thing is they cut their teeth on MAC OS and then went to the PC market as well so they could make a buck!

2 - "Product Description:
You'll find that AccountEdge is an extremely capable accountant, a great executive assistant, a terrific customer relations manager". IMHO it will never be a CRM - too slow - it really is slow - half the speed of the PC version and if you can't multilicence it across platform and auto synch with your Palm or PC when anywhere in the world what's the point of calling it CRM? They say that you import and export name lists but not really - just the salesman getting off with their usual hyperbole.

3 - "AccountEdge 2009 also includes integration with Marketcircle's productivity suite Daylite" - read the versiontracker reports on Daylite. Wonder why they didn't choose a good cross platform front end device such as FileMaker or NowUpToDate? "includes integration" is the carefully worded description.

4 - Annoying things? Setting up a client who has say 3 addresses - no problem - mail, billing & delivery say. What if they are all the same? You guessed it - you need to enter all separately. Very annoying and when MYOB questioned about it - "you are the first to complain about that"!

MYOB AccountEdge ReviewNew users should be very very careful - Version: 2008, 11/20/2008 08:49AM PST

I have used this software for many years. It has several strengths.
BUT if you do not belong to MYOB's own network of accountants, you should be very careful for two reasons before buying it. First that the upgrade costs and policies of MYOB are worse than almost any other company or developer. Second that completely on a random basis this software will seek to verify your registration with its website. Apart from being an intrusive, annoying invasion of privacy, I don't know what data about you it sends to MYOB or what it would do if you did not have the internet connection just at time the software wanted to check your licence. Would you loose all your data or continue your work if you can not establish contact with MYOB over a week end or holiday?
New users should purchase at their own risk because more expereinced ones would know about the above situation. There are many accounting products available for small businesses and non-MYOB network affiliated accountants.

MYOB AccountEdge CommentaryBest Mac accounting app - Version: 2009, 11/19/2008 07:45PM PST

I've used AE for six years (architecture) with never an issue. AE is stable, flexible easy to use, and is rigorous in terms of proper accounting protocols. On a Wintel platform, MYOB has serious competition in Peachtree, but on a Mac, Quickbooks doesn't even come close.

A solid, professional, accounting package. Support is really quite good if you spring for the cost.

Here we are approaching 2008, and MYOB is still shipping code that was written for System 7. I had high hopes that this would be the year that I finally ditched QuickBooks, but once you scratch through the ultra-thin veneer of Aquafied buttons, it doesn't look like MYOB has changed a single thing about their application. From the controls that can't draw themselves properly to the hideous icons, the whole thing looks like some Java nightmare that was only tested on Windows, and it's convoluted to boot. Bugs I reported in 2002 are still there, and I'm hard pressed to come up with a reason why I should ever give this company more money. QuickBooks blows, but it's at least somewhat usable.

MYOB AccountEdge Usage TipDon't get 2007 version!!! - Version: 11.1.0, 8/17/2007 03:14PM PST

I've been using the 2005 and 2006 versions (both regular and network edition in 2006) in my office with few problems, but ever since upgrading 2 weeks ago to the 2007 version, we've been having nothing but problems: sales defaulting to CC payments regardless of what payment type is changed to, inventory problems, even upgrading was problematic and took me (the person who usually get things to work right the first time) a good chunk of the afternoon just to get the primary workstation updated. There is no way to downgrade the data file back to the 2006 version, or I'd be using it again.
That said, MYOB is the _only_ accounting program that handles credit card transactions on the Mac (QuickBooks only does it on the PC version, MacPOS can do sales but not accounting and with the $600 extra just to accept credit cards becomes less attractive).
Yes, over the network, it can be slow, so whatever computer is doing the most work with it should be the host computer.
Unless you are well versed in accounting and keep impeccable records (entering everything right away), you should probably be sure to get support, since if you need it you don't want to shell out $$$.

MYOB AccountEdge ReviewGarbage. - Version: 2005, 7/3/2007 02:11PM PST

I used Account Edge Network Edition in my business for two years. It is *complete garbage*. It's unbelievably slow over a network, so much so that it makes the software virtually unusable. The interface is clunky, the program is slow, and the company relies on "paid support subscriptions" for revenue. Anything beyond basic support documentation is unavailable on the MYOB site without a subscription. I went back to Quickbooks on Jan 1 of this year!

MYOB AccountEdge ReviewSLOW - Version: 2007, 6/16/2007 03:59PM PST

My company uses MYOB for accounting purposes only. We use LightSpeed to do all ordering, invoicing, purchasing, etc. We simply export our data to MYOB daily. That being said, we don't use many of the features besides AP, reporting, and banking. It currently takes MYOB about 5 to 10 minutes to produce a simple P&L report. QuickBooks will do the same things for you in seconds. I really wish that Intuit would just make a multi-user version of QuickBooks for Mac. Basically this software has some nice features but the speed really is unacceptable. Our db is sitting on an Xserve G5 connected to a gigabit network and all clients are Intel Macs. Speed issues are most certainly not due to hardware.

Oh, and I did forget to mention the frequent crashes, user locking, and ultimately the constant rebooting of our server to get this software working again.

MYOB AccountEdge ReviewNetwork Edition is S-L-O-W - Version: 11.1.0, 4/24/2007 02:09PM PST

Captain Boom
Recently upgraded to AccountEdge NE, and the network experience is very frustrating. I find myself twiddling my thumbs for 5 to 10 seconds almost every time I change windows or select a different function. The accumulated time wasted is significant. I'm only using 2 machines on the network. A Powermac G4 and an iBook G3. The single user version was MUCH faster.

I've used AccountEdge for 5 years, and it has reasonably good functionality. The help system is difficult to find anything in, and insists on resizing my browser window. What a pain.

My experience with customer service has been mediocre at best. Some of the representatives are OK, but I have not been happy with others. It has not been a good experience.

On the positive side, it does have a lot of desirable features, which is why I continue to use it.

I'm going to try setting up the non-network edition on a spare iMac DV, and see if that will improve my speed issues. Tech support says I should be able to run it that way, and use my multiple licenses to access it.
