I reviewed this product back in 2004 and again in 2006, when I was disappointed in the lack of progress on the basics. I just picked up the latest version for kicks and I have to say am VERY impressed (and surprised) by the huge improvement!

For starters, it is way faster with large documents with lots of graphics and the file sizes are way smaller. This alone kills a lot of my frustrations.

Tons of other things have been refined. Check out the release notes for the very long list. My favorites include much better text handling and better option-dragging.

Create is still not perfect (I still wish it was easier to select multiple items and apply a property to them all. It works in some but not all case), but then no product is perfect.

I am once again using Create whenever I need to put stuff on a page in a more flexible way than a word processor allows. I can finally recommend Create again. Thanks to the authors and please keep up the good work!

To be honest, I don't use Create like I thought I would. I had planned on it being my layout and design program, but it's really only suited to quick and simple things in that area. But, nonetheless, I use it a quite a bit. Mostly for quickly modifying PDFs and printing them (like google maps), and vector drawing. It's a great program though, with awesome support. And it would be perfect for beginners, as it is super easy to use, though some things take some time to figure out.

It is a little expensive for what I get out of it, but with free updates for life, I can't complain. It's something I would probably miss if it were gone. I still think it has a place in my creative tools, perhaps one I haven't discovered yet.

There are only two things missing: A speed boost for long documents, and a better-written manual. I tried doing a 136-page book imported from MS Word and it proved to be too big a hassle, so I tossed it and went to InDesign. While Create is a model of simplicity, InDesign with it's complexities proved to be faster at the task. However, I was pushing a deadline and didn't really have the time to plow through the Create Manual.

And that's the other rub: Create could really use a manual written for it along the lines of O'Reilly's Missing Manuals for AppleWorks and MS Word with task-specific tutorials on such matters or laying out a 200-page trade paperback with a generous mist of text and graphics.

It would also be nice if there were a better selection of templates for book creation in various page dimensions. Also, when saving projects to PDF for use by printers, it would be nice if one could save them as printers page proofs.
