Product Description:

Timbuktu Pro is the premier remote control and file transfer solution for the “world’s most advanced operating system.” Timbuktu users can connect any combination of Macintosh or Windows computers via a network, or over the Internet. Functions include full remote control, observe only, fast file exchange, system profiling, text chat, instant messaging and voice intercom. Timbuktu Pro enables users to:
  • Reduce Call Resolution Time
  • Eliminate the Need to Travel
  • Resolve problems remotely
  • Collaborate virtually
  • Create a Seamless Environment without Expensive Hardware
  • Accomplish More in Less Time

If you have a computer at home and another at work, or if you need to transfer files between your Mac and PC, or if you would like to help family members, friends, or colleagues with their computers, you need Timbuktu Pro.

What's new in this version:

  • Timbuktu Pro now supports Mac OS X Panther (Mac OS X 10.3).
  • Timbuktu Pro now includes a new service, Profile. The Profile service allows you to automatically run the Apple System Profiler on a remote computer and return the results to your computer.
  • The screen-sharing window has been enhanced. It now supports more grayscale and color-depth options, and scroll-wheel and multi-button mouse support is now included.
  • The Preferences dialog box now includes the TCP Contact Port tab, which allows you to change the TCP port used for Timbuktu Pro traffic. This allows you to use more than one Timbuktu Pro host computer behind a NAT router, by directing traffic intended for a specific computer to a unique port on that computer.
  • The Control/Observe tab in the Preferences dialog box now includes a new option, Lock Out This Computerís Keyboard and Mouse. When this option is selected, and the computer is hosting an incoming screen-sharing session, keyboard and mouse activity on the local computer will have no effect.
  • The IP Locator tab in the Preferences dialog box now allows you to register your computerís external IP addressófor example, the IP address of a NAT router, rather than the local or internal IP address, which may not be recognized outside your network.
  • The TCP/IP Zones file no longer requires the forward slash (/) in the file name. TCPIP Zones is now an acceptable file name. Timbuktu Pro also recognizes an alias to the actual TCP/IP Zones file, which you may now place anywhere on your computer.
  • The Timbuktu Pro activity log now records more Timbuktu Pro activity, such as file activity during an Exchange session. In addition, the log file is stored in the default Mac OS X log-file folder, and you may view it with the Console application.
  • The Exchange: Go To menu has been extended with the Mac OS X Go menu shortcuts: Home, Desktop, Favorites, and Applications.
  • When the Only Accept Incoming Connections When Application Is Open option is selected on the General tab in the Preferences dialog box, Timbuktu Pro now runs as the logged-in user. It is no longer necessary to enter an administrator name and password when you run the application in this mode.

Timbuktu Pro ReviewGood App, but Crummy Company - Version: 8.7.1, 7/17/2008 12:11PM PST

Well, every time there is an update they never post the link on their site. I have to call and request it. The guy on the phone was nice and cooperative, but prior to his answer the recording told me how I couldn't speak with a person without purchasing support. Naturally, all this did was annoy me further. This is such poor service.

Also, why is the Mac version serialized, but the PC version isn't? Mac uses are dishonest, and the PC users aren't?

What about that there still isn't a Vista compatible version availble after over a year?! Yeah, 8.6 sorta runs (32 bit only), but you can uninstall it, and you have to change a bunch of stuff in Vista to get it to work. Oh, and 8.6.6 doesn't work, you have to use 8.6.0 and only that exact version. Pretty sad....

Like I said in the title, the software is great. The management of the company is obviously lacking.

Oh yeah, to save others the trouble of calling, here is a link to 8.7.1. I hope it saves you the frustration.

A. Nony Mouse
The software works- but for the money you can get better. I would try TeamViewer first to see if that doesn't answer your needs.

Also, Netopia is doing it all wrong. Charge your fee for the product but end it there. Cost for this and cost for that will sink your boat. Value added will mean free support of your product for all items in the future- get on board and you'll be guaranteed a place in the enterprise- We stopped doing business with you because of the fees involved. Now- don't bother asking for meetings.. Our belts are tight as are those of others. But what's tens of thousands of licensed seats worth to you? Nothing right? Bah. Now I'm getting angry again.
