Product Description:

For nearly twenty years, Timbuktu Pro for Mac OS has been the standard for remote control on the Mac OS. With it’s simple setup, intuitive, user-friendly interface, and multiple security options, Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh is the best remote control choice for your home, classroom or small business.

With Timbuktu Pro, you can view the screen of a remote computer, or share your screen with one or many remote computers to collaborate, teach or provide technical support. Use your mouse and keyboard to operate distant computers as if you were sitting right in front of them, send large files without tying up email, and communicate by intercom, text chat or instant message.

What's new in this version:

  • Stream Encryption and Compression...Timbuktu Pro version 8 supports SSH to encrypt and compress Timbuktu Pro connections.
  • System Authentication...Leveraging the security of the OS X platform, Timbuktu users can now authenticate using OS X usernames and passwords.
  • Reverse Connection Support...This allows you to drag and drop files directly from the screensharing window to your own desktop, without opening a new connection, even if you’re connected through a NAT router or firewall.
  • Push Installation...You may now push install Timbuktu Pro onto computers you administer which have enabled Remote Login. This process will also upgrade Timbuktu Pro on computers that are running a Timbuktu Pro version older than the version on your computer.
  • Remote Configuration Options...Using the push-install feature you can distribute Zones files, Timbuktu Pro preferences, site keys, and activation keys.
  • Rendezvous Integration...Timbuktu Pro version 8 supports Rendezvous — Apple’s zero-configuration networking technology. It’s one more way to easily find and connect to other users!
  • Ask for Permission Enhancements...Add another layer of access control by requiring your Registered Users to ask for permission before each connection. You will be able to allow or deny the incoming connection before it occurs.
  • Exchange Permission Enhancements...Exchange service permissions have been improved. When remote users establish system authenticated connections to your computer, they will be granted the same file-system access privileges that are assigned to the Mac OS X user profile with which they logged in..
  • Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

    • Mac OS X 10.3

    Additional Requirements:

    • Mac OS 10.3 or higher
    • For users running MacOS 8.6 through 10.2.8, the previous versions of Timbuktu (7.0.4) is included in the 8.0 package.

Well, every time there is an update they never post the link on their site. I have to call and request it. The guy on the phone was nice and cooperative, but prior to his answer the recording told me how I couldn't speak with a person without purchasing support. Naturally, all this did was annoy me further. This is such poor service.

Also, why is the Mac version serialized, but the PC version isn't? Mac uses are dishonest, and the PC users aren't?

What about that there still isn't a Vista compatible version availble after over a year?! Yeah, 8.6 sorta runs (32 bit only), but you can uninstall it, and you have to change a bunch of stuff in Vista to get it to work. Oh, and 8.6.6 doesn't work, you have to use 8.6.0 and only that exact version. Pretty sad....

Like I said in the title, the software is great. The management of the company is obviously lacking.

Oh yeah, to save others the trouble of calling, here is a link to 8.7.1. I hope it saves you the frustration.

The software works- but for the money you can get better. I would try TeamViewer first to see if that doesn't answer your needs.

Also, Netopia is doing it all wrong. Charge your fee for the product but end it there. Cost for this and cost for that will sink your boat. Value added will mean free support of your product for all items in the future- get on board and you'll be guaranteed a place in the enterprise- We stopped doing business with you because of the fees involved. Now- don't bother asking for meetings.. Our belts are tight as are those of others. But what's tens of thousands of licensed seats worth to you? Nothing right? Bah. Now I'm getting angry again.
