Product Description:

Client for the AOL online service.

What's new in this version:

  • You may now multiple-select mail items in the New Mail list and report them to AOL as Spam in a single step.
  • Now features new Buddy Icons. Supports the automatic display and updating of host-based buddy icons — both incoming for buddies on the buddy list and in IM windows; and outgoing to other members’ buddy lists and IM windows.
  • You are now able to change your IM Wallpaper. Note that your buddy will see your IM Wallpaper but it will not appear in your IM window. This is expected behavior for this feature.
  • You are able to choose a new emoticon (Smileys) set that appears in the emoticon drop down menus in IM and Chat. Now the art emoticons that replace typed emoticons in IM and Chat will be drawn from a host-based list.
  • E-mail in any online mail list can be visually distinguished by its icon.
  • Message Boards have been updated with a fresh, new look. Note: This is a host change that affects all AOL software (Mac and Windows).
  • New look for Member Profiles. The Member Profile window has a new layout and a fresh look. Note: This is a host change that affects all AOL software (Mac and Windows).
  • Pressing Command-L or selecting "Locate Member Online" from the People menu twice will beach ball the software indefinitely.
  • When applying mail filtering, e-mail from People I Know is also displayed under Unknown Senders.
  • Signing off (but not quitting AOL) with the Online Mailbox open will result in the Online Mailbox automatically opening when signing on again with the original or a different screen name.
  • When reading e-mail under New Mail or Old Mail, using the Next and Previous buttons on the e-mail form cycles through all e-mails, regardless of the mail filtering.
  • The Mail Away Message window displays artifacts when using the AOL for Mac OS X plus Beta software in Mac OS 10.2.X.
  • New Mail that is read and kept as new remains visible when switching to other screen names with the Mailbox window open.

America Online (AOL) Troubleshooting ReportWhy I Still Use AOL Mac SW - Version: 1.5b5, 10/29/2008 08:36PM PST

I had horrendous experiences for the first several months after I started using AOL for Mac. It would always freeze, shut down & do all kinds of sneaky things while the other 99% of my MacBook operated perfectly. Luckily they eventually came out with AOL Desktop (I think that was the 1st update after just regular old AOL for Mac which hadnt been updated since 1776.)

I havent had the crashing & freezing problems with this software but needless to say, it aint the greatest thing in the world. I want to get rid of it so badly, but I've got a brain injury & my memory would probably not allow me to learn an entirely new thing. I need the PFC & whatever else is saved on here - I know I couldn't start all the way over from scratch.

If anyone knows of another email program that allows you to do the following, I might consider switching but until then I'll stick with this horrible excuse for a piece of software:

1. save emails - not only in the immediate box but in the old/sent mails of the PFC
2. an IM program right in there with the email & the web browser - not that I dont use safari every time I need to get on the www.
3. My PFC is kind of invaluable.
4. My email address name - I know there are ways to keep an email address or something, but...
Maybe there's some kind of detox from AOL rehab program I can get in.
If anyone else could do all that, I'm sure they could do it better & without all the bad stuff which I won't get into. And it'd be great if I could find an American company that doesn't outsource to switch to! Don't get me started on that.
- Thanks,
Yaelle G.
