If you're going to be using this for academic/personal projects please take a little time and have a look at OxygenXML first.
Yes it's big, but it's *extremely* well done, and the feature set is several orders of magnitude above what's offered by XML Editor for pretty much the same price.
XML+DTD is pretty miserable these days!

Not a good first impression

Downloaded v1.14 for evaluation purposes last night and it gave a clean bill of health to an XML file that contained an entity not declared in the DTD. Tried to leave feedback to report the error at the developer site and 404'd trying to load the contact page.

XML Editor for a while now, and have compared it to other freeware/shareware offerings, but this one rises to the top. I really like the collapsing tree view, it makes working with the XML and XSL files quite a bit easier. I've even used it to edit XHTML files (since they are XML format, after all) to take advantage of the collapsing feature. 5 stars.
just FYI, I… - Version: 1.13, 1/18/2002 01:14PM PST

and I would have to say that I do like this program. At first I didn't warm up to it and investigated (thouroughly!) all of the free Unix variations on editor/validator for XML. I was NOT impressed with the paltry GUIs. Some programs were very intense, elegent, and powerful, like the XML project at Apache.org, but were also just as complex (perfect for the Unix/OS X geek). XML is here to stay and will become an important tool for anyone working with print, web, mobile data manipulation. It is not a focused language like HTML, but a full accompaniment of technologies which don't need to (or should?) be in the same program. The basis is still composing XML. I for one like working on the Mac platform because Mac developers try to focus on making the user experience enjoyable as well as productive. This program does this well. It is an excellent tool to learn and create XML. It may not have the power of Cocoon 2 (Apache), or the IBM tools, but it is running under OS X, NOT under OS X through Java like most other alternatives. After using an editor like this to create a bunch of XML docs, check out the open source XML searchable via XPath database called 'eXist' at http://exist.sourceforge.net/index.html if you want to dabble in Java and play with the Terminal.app, but end up with a very useful XML tool. On another point, the price of $55 is appropriate when you compare it to the amount of time the program saves you when writing XML docs, which I recommend you do before reviewing the program.
Nice, but needs…

to be open source. Otherwise I don't see any use for this, let alone spending that much money when there are many (free) options for XML editors and validators and parsers, including websites like http://www.cogsci.ed.ac.uk/%7erichard/xml-check.html and http://www.stg.brown.edu/service/xmlvalid/ Someone should port some of the command line and java XML utilities to OS X. Search dmoz.org, freshmeat.net, http://www.garshol.priv.no/download/xmltools/ and http://www.xmlsoftware.com/ for more info and options.

been reduced since, and many more features have been added. Also, if you want to see some more representative quotes (unfortunately, many posters here don't actually try the product, or even need it, yet still post), then visit my website.

(my product) If you want, you can email me your thoughts at delete@softhome.net Someone said it doesn't offer what XMetal does. What would you like to see in XML Editor (email me if possible so I can add it). I've added synax coloring for 1.03, and a whole bunch of other features.

icon, it looks okay to me. IMO, it's overpriced; but, I'm glad it's out there, one way or the other...
As well, we had a couple of questions/issues that we sent to the author. Not only did he reply within a day, but he actually programmed a handful of fixes and enhancements and sent a new build within a couple of days. Unbelievable responsiveness and customer service. Two thumbs up
