McAfee VirusScan CommentaryReally necessary? - Version: 8.6.1, 6/9/2008 09:25PM PST

OK. I admit, back on my iMacDV I did run Virex during the free beta period. When that ended, some insane paranoia caused me to switch to Symantec. Upon benchmarking and other speedtesting on my MacBook, I removed it. I haven't run ANY antivirus on my MacBooks in the last 2 years without any failure. I find that simple firewalling and router settings have kept my machine problem-free? I have an external HDD that Time Machine keeps updated for me hourly, and I don't understand the need for this product, or others like it? Really. I've got 30 years of I.T. experience and I simply choose not to slow my Mac down with this sort of thing. I open all my email, download lots, and browse tirelessly without worry. Is it just peace-of-mind that necessitates the expense of a product like this? I'm happy with Time Machine and wonder what it is that you're getting with this software that Time Machine's scheduled FREE hourly backups doesn't provide? Especially when I see that Time Machine actually cures all of the issues I've seen mentioned which are caused by this software... but if it makes you feel better... send me your money, I'll tell you that you're OK weekly rather than running a long laborious scan getting the same result... This might be better discussed in a forum, but I couldn't hold back, and wanted to put it out there for people like my dad who are looking at this going "eek! I need to protect myself against terrorism!"

(BTW, that's not sarcasm)

This finally brings the Mac into line with the rest of the McAfee suite, enabling it to be more properly managed by ePO. The previous version(s) were still somewhat consumer-focussed, and the ePO management only extended to some of the settings in VirusScan's Preferences.

Those limitations, coupled with McAfee's habit of randomly changing the case (UPPER vs lower) of the files in their master FTP site has caused some havoc, particularly with sites such as ours where we mirror their FTP site locally to a different platform (their server seems to be Windows while ours is Linux), and the change in filename case screws up our clients' ability to update.

I realize that the feature changes in 8.6.1 are of limited interest to end-users, but they're definitely good news for large-scale environments managed by IT, due to the improvements to ePO platform parity. It also demonstrates some commitment from McAfee to continue to actively develop their Mac version (IIRC, Apple developed the UI for Virex 7.2, which VirusScan 8.6 still uses, to replace McAfee's horrible Virex 7.0 UI).

"Browser Requirements
Please note that Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (or higher) or Firefox 1.5 (or higher) is required to purchase and install McAfee products.

To continue, please return to the previous page using Internet Explorer or Firefox."

This should wrap what would you expect from a company making antivirus to run on an advanced OS like Leopard. Nothing.

Sad thing is, Intego really needs a real rival to stop their insane pricing policy. With rivals like these, there is no hope.
