Adobe Photoshop Elements ReviewI just ordered… - Version: 1.0, 7/21/2002 02:50PM PST

the upgrade to 2.0, just before the MacWorld. I can't, for me, justify the expense of Pshop 7.0, not doing this commercially. Most of the Photoshopalikes for the consumer are lame, as was that PhotoDeluxe monstrosity -- the average Joe doesn't need all the complexities, but that "let us smart people solve that for you and don't you trouble your pretty little head" approach was lethal. I'd look at the simplified menus and the simplified formats for output, and think, "This is as stupid as 'Dave' was". Now, I like the Adobe pedigree for imaging, but don't need the expense of all those other features I wouldn't use. I hope they've further streamlined the interface on 2.0., but it will be Carbon-based, so the main result will be the disappearance of Classic mode off my machine except for scanning. I presume that TWAIN will finally be natively supported on X starting with Jaguar, so then -- what would I need 9 (or IX) for?

the poor reviews. Elements really is fast and works as advertised. It has many of the features of the full PS product for a fraction of the price. It is so much better than PS LE that it replaces. Now if only they offered an upgrade path for Elements owners to get the full PS7 product, all would be well with the world. :)

trying to download it for days. No clue as to how far it gets because they don't tell you how much you have downloaded. I suspect all the bitching I am hearing about the app is true because the company doesn't appear to want to be customer friendly to us less wealthy clients.

Elements is a very cool app. You can't compare it to LE, I missed so many features in LE that Elements bring. It runs okay on my 350 MHz/192 MB RAM iMac. A bit more speed was better but I'm happy that Adobe still supports Mac and offers such a low cost app with so many cool features.

with Maveryk. Adobe says it needs 64MB RAM when in fact it needs much more. Works OK on my 128MB desktop, but slows to mollases on my 64MB iBook. Plus it grabs over 30MB of RAM on startup and even after quitting the application it keeps a goody of portion of that requiring a restart to reclaim the memory. I suspect I'll stick with PhotoshopLE, a much leaner application that has most features of Elements, but is not such a hungry hog.

of the information being sent was requested? You don't think an intrusive installer like VBox can't get your computer's Owner Name or any other details it wants? DO NOT INSTALL PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS OR ANY OTHER ADOBE/VBOX DEMO IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER ADOBE PRODUCT OR IT WILL WIPE OUT YOUR REGISTRATION INFO: http://www.macfixit.com/archives/april.01.a.shtml#elements-04-03 IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE FOR ADOBE OR VBOX TO REVOKE YOUR LICENSE, EVEN AFTER YOU HAVE PURCHASED IT: http://www.previewsystems.com/support/VboxMacBuilderReadme.html Overall, VBox is just plain evil -- as evil as many parts of Microsoft really...
