GnuPG CommentaryNot yet Snow Leopard Ready - Version: 1.4.9, 9/20/2009 05:19PM PST

A new version of GPG that will be compatible with Snow Leopard is in development. Watch for it.

Also in the works is a new version of GPGMail that will work with Apple's Mail v4.x, the version that ships with Snow Leopard. However, GPGMail will only run when Apple Mail 4 is set (via Get Info) to run in 32 bit mode. Bleh. Apparently this is due to the age of the current code. A rewrite will be required to move it up to 64 bit compatibility and there is no schedule as to when that will happen. Bleh. But keep in mind this is Open Source freeware. Thank you to those who keep it up-to-date.

Meanwhile, PGP is NOT Snow Leopard ready either, but an update is also in the works:

i hate this crap that sits on versiontracker promising useful functionality and a GUI and turns out to be created for UNIX geeks. i've run two installers that have accomplished the following:

1) they've put several incomprehensible and incompatible/error-producing pieces of software on my machine, and

2) they've rendered Mail.app non-functional.

nothing else appears to have been achieved; certainly nothing i can understand (and i'm a Mac power user with 20+ years experience).

i'd like to uninstall the software; i hope i can figure out how to do so, but have not yet encountered the word "uninstall" in my perusal of the poorly-written and grossly incomplete documentation.

evidently there just is no user-friendly email security for the Mac. tried CryptoHeaven, but that's its own ugly email client; i don't want an email client; i have an email client. i just want to secure the messages i send and receive with the client i already have.

*sigh*

Afterthought...

Phil Zimmermann "invented" PGP quite a few years ago and GnuPG will be celebrating their 11th anniversary soon. I wonder why in this age of "User Friendly, ready to run out of the box" software, there are still programs that demand quite a bit of technical expertise to install and run (command line or third-party interfaces to fill in the gap) and are still problematic to use. When are those people are going to come out of the "dark ages"?

I posted my original question on 4 forums to get as much feedback as possible from GnuPG users but to no avail. I assume that it isn't a very popular program.

GnuPG ReviewNow Simple To Install - Version: 1.4.8, 12/24/2007 12:47PM PST

You MUST read the ReadMe, as ever, before you install. But this version provides a dead simple package installer. It is worth getting the MD5 for the DMG and verifying the installation package has not been altered. Then install away! Read read read to understand how to set everything up once it is installed. But encryption is the future of the Internet, now that everyone wants to spy on us, including our own governments as we head into 'The Late Dark Age' as I call it. But I rant...

Other goodies to get: GPG Keychain Access, GPG DropThing, GPG FileTool, GPG Mail, GPG Preferences. And of course always check back here to see if a new version has been released.

Privacy is a human right. Don't let any fascist scum convince you otherwise.

Ahhhhhhhhhh, now I know what this is. It's a Gnu version of PGP. PGP home destroyed two of my hard drives. If you don't know exactly what this is, how to use it, and the dangers, then stay very far away.

Swish, the sound it makes going over my head. What's a GnuPG ? Is that some kind of STD. Never mind I don't want to know. it might hurt my brain even more.

GnuPG ReviewWorks well - Version: 1.4.3, 4/23/2006 11:16AM PST

I've had no problems so far with the updated release. Too bad the packagers take so long to produce an updated package. I've you want the latest bugfixes, you better compile updates yourself (Ease of Use will then decrease, of course).

GnuPG ReviewDid not work - Version: 1.4.1, 11/5/2005 07:37AM PST

I'm running 10.4.3 and this may be the issue of course.

I installed 1.4.1 with the aid of the helpful visual guide and can see that all folder, etc were created correctly. Unfortunately evey associated application (Mail, Keychain, etc) sats that there are no Keys generated.

The GPGKeychain utility can see v1.4.1 but it cannot write new keys into the keychain.

Having run into the problem I am able to find a simple support resource/community tohelp resolve the issue. I cannot even uninstall it!!!!!!

On that basis no wonder so few people use encrytion (and why there is so much spam). There's got to an easy (more productive/less geeky) solution.

GnuPG Usage TipSECURITY WARNING - Version: 1.4.1, 4/17/2005 08:38AM PST

This installer creates a backup of an existing ~/.gnupg folder in you homefolder.
This is a nice idea, unfortunately the backup folder is readable by everyone!
As your homefolder is usually also readble by everyone (to ensure readaccess to your Public- and Sites- folder, everyone can have access to the backupfolder also. If the enclosed keys and keyrings are (by accident) also readable for everyone, this might grant others access to your keys.
After installing, change the rwx-flags of the backup-folder to no access for everyone except the owner!

I suggest the auhor of the installer should fix this ASAP.

GnuPG ReviewExcellent free encryption capability - Version: 1.4.1, 4/16/2005 04:10PM PST

Several compononents out there that support this engine for Apple's mail, thunderbird, and mozilla suite (enigmail). Keys are interoperable with commercial pgp. Several utilities for key management etc available so you don't have to live on the command line.

Only real capability that is missing is a gnupg-disk type of set up like pgp-disk which creates a pgp encrypted disk image capability. Though this is not a limitation of the engine so it does't count against my review ;)
