Product Description:

Eudora is a mail and news application based on the open source Thunderbird client from Mozilla. It's *not* our intention to compete with Thunderbird; rather, we want to complement it.

We are committed to both preserving the Eudora user experience and to maintaining maximum compatibility, for both developers and users, with Thunderbird. It is our goal to build a single development community around Thunderbird and Eudora, so that both mailers advance faster than they previously have.

Whereas "Eudora" is a branded version of Thunderbird with some extra features added by the Eudora developers, "Penelope" is an extension (also called an "add-on") that can be used with either Eudora or Thunderbird. The Eudora installer includes the corresponding version of Penelope along with it so there is no need to install Penelope if you are installing Eudora. Most features in Penelope can be accessed when used with Thunderbird, but there are a few that require Eudora in order to work correctly and it's not something that gets tested.

Sometimes in documentation there is a need to differentiate the older versions of Eudora made by Qualcomm from current Thunderbird-based versions of Eudora. This will normally be done by labeling the older versions of Eudora as "original Eudora" or "Classic Eudora".

Eudora Usage TipRecipients vs. Senders - Version: 8.0.0b7, 10/7/2009 06:38PM PST

WhiteDog
There is a poorly iconed pull-down menu above the scroll arrow at the upper right of the message list pane. In this menu are two occurrences of the item "Who." The top one enables Recipients; the bottom one enables Senders (I have only the bottom one checked). This feature is by no means clear - I worked it out through trial and error. The first trick is to find the blasted pull-down menu. The Recipients/Senders feature is a Penelope add-on item. It's not present in the Thuderbird or even Eudora without Penelope.

By the way, I've found that Penelope has serious problems in OS X 10.6.1. With a message selected in the message pane, any keyboard input moves one or another message to the trash. If you have the trash in the message window, keyboard input will delete a selected message entirely. As a result, I have had to disable Penelope in Eudora, which rather defeats the purpose of using the Eudora version of Thunderbird. I have not reported this issue because filing bug reports for Eudora remains, as it has been for a very long time, incredibly tedious. As always with Eudora, you just have to hope they will find and fix the bug eventually - I call that the Eudora tax. Even though the program is now free, that tax remains. The developers continue to hide behind a screen of open source gobbledegook. Given that they make user feedback so difficult, I wonder why they even bother with the Eudora/Penelope project. Given the long intervals between updates, they clearly don't bother very much.

The inbox in this version (v.b7) appears to show the names of the recipients instead of the senders. Hope they fix this soon.

Eudora CommentaryEditing mailboxes - Version: 8.0.0b7, 9/8/2009 10:22AM PST

In the original Eudora, it was possible to fully edit the contents of all mailboxes. Is this capability retained in the new version?
