right. The biggest specific reason for this update was to fix a bug that would significantly slow down digital audio extraction. Any G4 should be able to encode between 8x and 12x, so if you're getting significantly less the slowdown is in your drive. Use TomeViewer to extract the updater if you can't get it to install.

not so sure that is true. I have a FAST computer, a 450 MHz cube. I encode at 2.1x. Two other cubes that I have used that let me apply the update encode at 8x speed. Also this update says: This update improves the audio extraction performance of your DVD-ROM drive."

speed should not be affected by any firmware updates. DVD-ROM audio extraction is significantly faster than MP3 encoding, so if you want iTunes to encode fast, then you'll have to go get yourself a new computer. Better yet, since you're a G4 user, go get DropMP3 or any other encoder that uses the Altivec-optimized LAME SharedLib.
