this Ethernet Update 2.0 installer definitely has some perceptual difficulties: -- The reason some people are getting -36 errors is that at least three files in this package are damaged: SWLicense, TgtSelect, and Welcome. I found this when I tried to copy the entire mounted disk image to my hard drive--the Finder reported it couldn't copy these files since they were damaged. -- The mounted disk image is a 31 megabyte volume, with about 4.5 meg used, leaving about 27 meg "free". I have no idea why Apple would do this. The 4.5 meg is composed of the overblown installer, which is a complete copy of Apple's recent installer app, with all its "engines" and other crap--all this just to place a file into the Extensions folder. -- The path to the actual "Apple Enet" extension is a silly set of repetitively named folders (but this is nothing new): Ethernet: Installer Files: Ethernet: Installer Files: Apple Enet -- The mounted disk image is simply named "Ethernet", instead of a more descriptive name like "Ethernet 2.0 Updater". -- A Get Info on the supplied "Apple Enet" extension identifies it as part of package "Ethernet Update 1.0", even though this is Ethernet Update 2.0--there was a previous "Ethernet Update 1.0". -- And, when I ran the stupid installer, it complained "The SWLicense plugin could not be found. Make sure you are using the original CD or floppy disks." I've never seen this before. I tried running this installer on one of the Macs that supposedly can use this update--an iMac DV running OS 9.2.1, and this still happened. I wound up just dragging the "Apple Enet" file to the System Folder. This worked just fine. If anyone needs any evidence of how careless Apple can be, I've just presented it.

OS 9.2.1 and, at last, my original iMac browses (NS 4.78) as fast as a PC on my high speed academic network. Neville - n.hillyer@open.ac.uk - http://informatics.open.ac.uk

only supposed to install under 9.2.1. BUT, It is not recommended to install 9.2.1 on our Macs unless we run X. Nice catch 22 for those who don't want to run X yet, ehh? (Of course I run 9.2.1 on a non-X macs because I must have the latest version!) This is another disk image that doesn't behave if mounted with Stuffit Expander. If the installer icon is generic, dismount the volume and double click on the image so it mounts itself.
