Product Description:

The Microsoft UAM provides a superior method for encrypting the passwords that you use to log into Windows AFP Servers. The standard Apple UAM provides only minimal encryption (if any) so your password could easily be intercepted on the LAN or Internet. Although the UAM is not required, it does provide secure encrypted authentication to Windows 2000 Servers running Services For Macintosh.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS Classic

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS 8.5 - 9.x

Microsoft UAM ReviewIt doesn't work… - Version: 5.0.11, 7/9/2002 06:59AM PST

- the password changing part doesn't change passwords, and it won't allow you to set a drive to open by default. The Apple UAM, by contrast, does work.

if your admin has disabled Guest access (account) to the SFM file shares. This UAM does not allow password change (e.g. password expires) using NT4 servers; Microsoft claims this is "by design" because it is "designed for Windows2000". After 3 years, Keychain support was added.

for product reviews not discussions of the Pro/Cons of Open/proprietary standards. Since I took the time to write that I'll go ahead and throw out some food for thought: Apple isn't too different from Microsoft in fact when you think about it Apple has control of the OS and the hardware. I'd hate to remind everyone that Mac clones were gone with a snap of Steve's fingers. Ever wonder why Apple switch from zif sockets to their own proprietary socket for CPU modules? My guess? too many cheap cpu upgrades were effecting sales and since Apple has almost complete control over their hardware. Now you have the option of buying a 1.6ghz Athlon for $100 or a 1 ghz G4 for $800.
