Product Description:

Bookends is a full featured and cost-effective bibliography/reference and information management system for professionals and students.
With Bookends you can easily import references (information about journal articles, books, etc.) from EndNote or hundreds of online sources accessible from your browser. Import directly from PubMed. Amazon, and the Library of Congress from our free Reference Miner application by drag and drop. You can bookmark favorite web sites (such as PubMed, Ingenta (Uncover/Reveal), etc.) and instantly access them via your browser.
Attach any file (such as a pdf) to a reference and view or open it instantly from within Bookends.
Scan your word processor files and automatically generate finished manuscripts with properly formatted bibliographies. Access the power of Bookends directly from MS Word, Mellel, and Nisus Writer.

What's new in this version:

  • Compatibility with Word 2004. Temporary citations are pasted into Word 2004 automatically. Temporary in-text citations with accented characters are resolved. The appearance of the icons in the Bookends toolbar has been improved. When first run, Bookends installs the Word add-in and template into the appropriate Microsoft Office 2004 folders.
  • Better use of Ibid. When 'Use Ibid.' is specified in a format, it only applies to in-text citations (for example, footnotes), not the bibliography.
  • Improved Title Case. When a title is output in Title Case, the first letter of a word after an apostrophe will be capitalized.
  • BibTeX citations can be superscripted during a scan
  • Bug fixes and enhancements. When importing, a tab after a tag is treated like a space. Improved handling of "Valid Tags" when importing. Bibliographies are no longer incomplete if they are created while the Hits Window is in front and View Formatted is enabled. Edited format style information is stored and recalled correctly. Adding all references in a Term List to the Hits List with Shift-click now increments the Hit values correctly. Mellel citations that have "quoted" characters (i.e. enclosed by the \ character) at the beginning and the end now resolve correctly during a scan. Lines at the bottom of a page are no longer lost when printing the contents of the Bibliography window. With BibTeX enabled and required fields indicated, the indicator (e.g. color) will update correctly if a reference is not the default Type and a new reference is created. When using "BibTeX" citations, curly brackets are used instead of tildes. Proofreading scans can be performed on BibTeX documents.

used any bibliographic software before I downloaded BE. I found it easy enough to use just by going through the tutorial. The best part of my experience, however, was the tech support -- responsive, quick and thorough.

working with Bookends for several years--after using EndNotes. Over this time, I have amassed a DB of several thousand references. Initially I was drawn to Bookends because of its interface--something I find particularly useful in that Bookends allows me to see all the critical information "right up front." Their newest version (7) is a joy to use. Searching is faster and scrolling through records is a snap. Little nice touches abound, as when doing a search on an author, the author's name appears in different font sizes indicating a solo or partnered authorship. But the real strength of a program is when you have particular problems or needs and here Bookends tec support is second to none. Actually, if I could find better support out there, I'd probably marry it.
