Product Description:

Mailsmith is an Internet email client for the Macintosh which offers unparalleled filtering, searching, editing and scripting capabilities. Mailsmith breaks new ground in making powerful email-handling capabilities accessible to users of all levels.

What's new in this version:

Mailsmith 1.1.8 is a maintenance release, providing bug fixes, a few new features, and improved compatibility with certain SMTP servers.

Mailsmith 1.1.8 introduces a new “export” scripting command, which allows you to export the entire contents of a mailbox to mbox format. Example syntax:

  • export mailbox "Foo" to "Hard Disk:folder:foo.export"
–- export to a file with the specified name and location
  • export mailbox "Foo" to "Hard Disk:folder:"
-- export to a new file with the same name as the mailbox in the specified folder
If the “to” parameter is omitted, Mailsmith will ask you for the file name. The file specification may be either a file or a folder; if it’s a file, Mailsmith will create it if necessary. (The normal limitation of using aliases applies, so if you want to export to a new file, use an absolute file path.) If the specification is a folder, it must exist; Mailsmith will create the exported file inside of it, and will sequence the name if necessary to avoid overwriting an existing file. The “export” scripting command can only be used to export entire mailboxes.

If you have an appropriately recent version of the Text Encoding Converter installed (1.5 or later), Mailsmith will use the TEC to translate from the character set specified in the message to Mac Roman for mail display purposes. Among other things, this means that 8-bit characters in messages sent by Apple Mail using UTF-8 can now be displayed. (Note that translation is only functional for X-Charset values that can be translated to Mac Roman. Multi-byte and non-Roman character sets are not supported.) Note that when relocating your Mailsmith setup, you must take care to copy your “Mailsmith Prefs” file as well as the “Mailsmith Data” folder. However, the best way to do this, is to just move your entire Mailsmith application folder at once, since it contains everything you need for a working Mailsmith setup.

As of this release, Mailsmith no longer supports MacTCP; hence, the “Open Transport Networking” checkbox has been removed from the “Services” panel of the preferences.

Mailsmith CommentaryToo little, too late - Version: 2.2.2, 9/23/2009 10:35AM PST

Obee Juan
When I first switched to OS X several years ago, I quickly latched on to Mailsmith (despite its rather exorbitant price tag) because it simply had no comparable peer on the Mac. It was easily the most powerful email client available and remained so for some time. Unfortunately, it had gone years without updates, and lack of support for Intel Macs and IMAP service eventually rendered it a has-been. That meant for folks like me who now have iPhones and are using MobileMe or other IMAP services, Mailsmith is dead to us. I've since moved on to Postbox and while I had remained hopeful that Mailsmith would win me back, this release and its continuing lack of IMAP support has dashed those hopes.

Mailsmith ReviewMailsmith 2.2.1 (292) USELESS new Addressing interface - Version: 2.2.1, 8/22/2009 07:58PM PST

Jean-Luc
New Addressing is POORLY implemented
Faulty Auto-completion
No Pop up selection of address list, it just default to the first address it founds !
No FIND button in the address window
WRONGLY implemented Address Picker
Impossible to drag and drop addresses
Impossible to multi address without creating group Which is not convenient !
Impossible to Command or Shift Click Selection (like in Apple Address Book)
DEVELLOPER is saying
There currently aren't any plans to change the way addressing is done !
WHICH IS SAD as this has been our preferred email software for years !
BUT IT IS NOW UNWORKABLE because of the addressing issue in our configuration at least, I guess it is ok for someone sending a few email to a few names, we have 450 emails addresses and with 20 groups and need often not to use the group to send to multi recipients !
It has become impossible to do with this new version, I had to go back to V 2.1.5 which does work perfectly.
