Product Description:

Monica is a queue based file download program for downloading files from the Internet using ftp and http protocols. Don't you hate it when you have a lot of files to download and you have to sit in front of your browser waiting to be able to start the next one? Don't you hate it when you are downloading from a slow server and your browser deviously aborts your download leaving it incomplete? Don't you want your downloads to automatically retry if the server connection is dropped? Don't you hate it when you cannot log onto an ftp server because it has reached its maximum number of logins? Don't you wish you could restart downloads without losing what you already have? If you answered yes to any of these questions then MONICA is for you. Monica allows you to easily set up a download queue by dragging and dropping or cutting and pasting file URLs. Once you have placed some files in the queue you may manually start each download at a time convenient to you, or allow MONICA to start downloading automatically. In automatic mode, once a file is received Monica will start the next one. If the server times you out or if the download is incomplete then MONICA will restart the download and do her best to resume from where the download left off, while you can go off to more pleasant occupations.

What's new in this version:

Monica has been extensively rewritten internally, and we wanted to use REALbasic 3.0 to compile the new version so as to provide good stability. So many things have been improved under the hood that it is impossible to detail them all. Major changes include:
  • Improved handling of buggy FTP servers
  • Improved handling of many HTTP servers
  • Better handling of queue-enabled Hotline servers
  • Redesigned main screen
  • More efficient queue handling
  • Documentation in HTML
  • Ability to show/hide download windows easily
  • Facility to change number of concurrent downloads on the fly
  • Addition of a ( beta ) FTP Loader helper application
  • Improved stability ( compiled in REALbasic 3.0 )

I'd like to see is a "open downloads folder" button. After all, there is space at the top.

far the best download utility available for the mac, no contest. It can browse and download from ftp, http and hotline servers. It features a download queue, download resuming, auto-retrying busy servers, and even re-connecting/resuming downloads if your connection drops! It downloads files pretty fast (just like it's predecessor, HeftyFTP), but unlike HeftyFTP it uses almost no CPU time, and it's pretty friendly with sharing bandwidth when other programs need it, so it's very multi-tasking friendly now. Also the interface is just plain awesome; it's easy to use yet very powerful while being almost entirely icon-based (with descriptions that show up at the bottom of the window on mouseover), and aside from just looking great, it's almost entirely compliant with the appearance manager, so when you use a different appearance "theme" almost every aspect of the interface reflects the change. The only thing I didn't like about it is that it doesn't work with URLs sent to it by other programs or the OS (if you set it to handle ftp connections, then click on an ftp link or open an ftp url, it will launch monica, but it won't try to access the URL), but it's not really hard to just drag a URL into monica's window or paste it into the URL field.
