MathType Reviewcould not see any improvement over v5.1 - Version: 6.0, 9/8/2008 12:17PM PST

except being UB now, could not find any improvements on UI or feature set since v5.1.

Copying as TeX causes error very often and unstable, especially when there are some accute or accents applied. Sometimes crashes when pasting or typing TeX expressions.

You may just call it v5.x but defintely not v6.0 with this much changes.

Please watch out your competitors, MathMagic and MathEq.

MathType Troubleshooting ReportMathType Installer did not work - Version: 6.0, 8/27/2008 12:56AM PST

Ran the installer on a standard up-to-date Leopard (10.5.4) Mac with Office 2004 and 2008 (with all the latest updates). It succeeded on Word and Powerpoint 2004 but there fails to OLE register in 2008 so that Word and Powerpoint 2008 still use the standard MS Equation Editor and do not recognize MathType equations. Reported this problem to Design Science almost 2 weeks ago, but as of today, no solution has been provided.

MathType CommentaryA response from DesignScience - Version: 5.1, 5/14/2007 03:45PM PST

I was too curious about a universal binary update. So, I emailed DesignScience and received a respose within several hours.

They stated that they are finishing their work on v6.0 of MathType for Windows this year, and that they anticipate a release of v6.0 for Mac in 2008.

I know that it will be a long wait. But, when released, I would expect it to be compatible with a new Microsoft Office suite.

MathType ReviewInstaller fails - Version: 5.1, 11/17/2006 07:52AM PST

I believe this product has been abandoned.

After reading the previous comments, I quit all applications and then ran the installer. Of course, I realized my external disks were still mounted when I saw that the installer seemed to be taking a long time before installing anything. So I forced a quit of the installer (probably a mistake), unmounted the drives and tried again. After a warning that I had already installed the trial version, the installer apparently kept going to install again. It seemed to hang again but I didn't wait.

Net result of the install was a "MathType 5" folder in Applications, and a single "Unix executable" file inside it called "mt5.dsc". Completely worthless.

Bye bye MathType!

MathType ReviewNot much support for Mac ... - Version: 5.1, 1/27/2006 12:03AM PST

How come no update for long time, though some of the minor bugs can be fixed at no time.
Their Mac update is always far behind Windows. .T.

MathType ReviewMust have tool for Math Teachers! - Version: 5.1, 8/5/2005 11:32AM PST

I've been creating my handouts and math tests with the equation editor that comes with MS Word. It wasn't until I upgraded to MathType that I found out: the same company makes both products (Design Science makes the equation editor that comes with MS Word).

The feature set in MathType blew me away. The reason I upgraded was originally for the color support (you can change part of an equation to different colors, which makes it easier to show a derivation on an overhead). Then I got hooked on the palletes. As I created equations, fragments of equations, or any other element that I used over and over -- I could just drag it to the pallete. I've built up a whole library now of quation fragments that makes authoring new tests so easy I save at least an hour on each one! I'm just now exploring the web authoring support and the whole "MathML" language.

MathType turns MS Word into a math-intelligent math "CAD" program. It's simply a must have for anyone that works with Math equations day in and day out.

MathType Reviewshould compete with MathMagic! - Version: 5.1, 3/23/2005 11:40AM PST

I've been using MathType on Mac since mid '90.
MathType had opened a good approach for easier equation work in the beginning but their progress/update is quite slow since then, especially on Mac.
MathMagic has catched up and is better than MathType in most of equation work on Mac, although some TeX conversion and MathML support is better on MathType.
Design Science should watch MathMagic for their user interface and equation quality.
If you are a MS Word user, MathType might be better choice because it works like a part of Word. Otherwise, you can try(both have free trials) both MathMagic and MathType to see if which works better for you.

MathType CommentaryTry MathEQ - Version: 5.1, 6/12/2004 01:19PM PST

I don't know about the current state of affairs, but MathEQ, which has been on the Mac since the 1980s, has always made better-looking output than MathType. Check it out. And note that the price of MathEQ mentioned on verstiontracker.com appears to be wrong, so don't freak at that.

MathType Usage TipFree and easy to use alternative - Version: 5.0, 3/27/2004 09:09AM PST

I haven't tried this application, and the following is not intended to disparage it at all, but if you need a free and relatively easy to use alternative, check these options out.Briefly, TexFog allows you to code the equations in latex without knowing the language, and equation editor or equation services allows you to render the equation as a pdf.
