Helix RADE CommentaryHELIX Rade is the BEST - Version: 5.3.2, 6/9/2006 06:59AM PST

The best relational database I have ever used on the Mac. I am customer 269 and bought the initial software a week or two after it was first introduced.

I've tried to keep up with upgrades and see that I am one behind. I will correct that.

I presently have about 25 relations in use at this time.

Keep up the good work.

Helix RADE ReviewBest Mac DB Resurrected! - Version: 5.3, 12/5/2004 08:14AM PST

This new version of Helix, which includes the development RADE program as well as Client/Server and Runtime modules is a big step forward, with marked improvements in networking and stability. Nothing comes close to Helix for the amatuer programmer and even those with programming skills easily get hooked. The developers have promised an OS X version which will bring Helix into the modern Mac era. While I know the Helix Old Timers will flock to this program, I would also recommend it to 'newbies' who want a development environment that they can actually use!

user since Double-Helix and although I've tried 4D, Panorama and Filemaker, I think Helix is the fastest way to a stable and fast database.

largely from the process of moving toward an OS 9/X version. It addresses many long-standing design-mode usability and interface issues, bringing Helix into substantial compliance with today's Carbon-level Human Interface Guidelines. It's once again a pleasure to develop (drag-'n'-drop, not "program"!) a database in Helix! Performance is phenomenal--a 45-minute utility check now takes just over a minute; getting info on an abacus or field is nearly instantaneous; finding every "needle" in the database "Haystack" is quick as "Ouch!" (because the Server can keep data in RAM for extremely rapid access). Stability is rock-solid for both Client and Server, and they can now operate across TCP/IP (i.e., local EtherNet or the global "internet"). The update team even promises free enhancements for some shortcomings which were identified but not fully resolved by release time. In summary, I've determined that I made the right decision to update, and I recommend this version highly.

regularly since 1993 to manage a large (every year larger) and elaborated relational data base. It's icon-based interface gives me a unique blend of power and ease of use. I've upgraded to version 5, am happy with it, and eagerly await version 6 (for OS X).

developer from the beginning (started on LISA with MacWorks). I tried 4D, Omnis, FoxPro, FileMaker and some other - but I still think that Helix is by far the easiest and fastest development environment! I am also waiting for a OSX and a cross platform version for years now and I am sure that there will be one in the near future!

still cry for a crossplatform support and/or SQL interface, we Helix users really doubt that this is the key for survival of this great tool. The most important thing is the move to OSX. Helix has always been the database for academics and small business, who might use the Mac, and only the Mac, anyway and do not need SQL. I am confident that Helix 5.1 is only the first step of a careful transition to OSX, and I trust the Helix community to help by upgrading all the old Helix licenses to 5.1 ;-)

around since the early days of the Mac. We've used it in our medical practice since 1986, currently with 15 doctors, 60,000 patients and hundreds of thousands of entries. Helix is still one of the most powerful and most easy to use development packages for the Mac, even today (beats Filemaker for our purposes by far). Unfortunately, the Helix people reportedly angered Apple in the early years and has suffered from very poor management in the past. Now, thanks to several Helix evangelists (or as I call them, Reanimators), Helix has been updated to 5.1, partly for improvements for current users but also to prepare for conversion to OS X (runs great in Classic). If you need a powerful, easy to program rapid development environment (RADE), take a look at Helix.
