This is listed at VT as freeware, but upon installation we're told it's a 30 day trial. This software costs 29 euro. That's $46 American.

I am very satisfied with SEE. It is a fast & lightweight tool for our textual collaboration. Just see the rating: just five stars.
But even beyond that: I reported a strange crash of SEE (which happens very rarely to me) just a few days ago - it was one the these "unreproducible" issues ;-) I've received a message from the developer the same day and they managed it to fix this crash in no time!

Subethaedit was my favorite OS X text editor (although I regularly use vim). I never used the collaborative feature, I just used SEE as a standard GUI editor, but when it became payware, I had to decide if it was really worth it.
I decided to pay for an OS X text editor, even though I am happy with vim. However, the feature sets I found worth paying for were in TextMate, so I bought that one instead. You should take a look at that before making a final decision.
Older versions of SEE are also available for free for non-commerical users.

Goodbye, and thanks for all the fish. I used SEEdit when it was still called Hydra, and when it was still free. The previous version was payware for commercial users only, but now it seems everyone is supposed to pay. Well, too bad, I won't bother. TextWrangler is a good, and free, alternative.

seems so dr. greed has paid a visit to the dev team. what about a free nonbonjour version? <br> too bad, after a strong start in 2003 they dropped the ball and left us with a rather slow editor (ever tried to open and search huge files??). time to move on. (thanks for apple on following up on rectangular selections ... i had requested that several times).
Now obligatory payware. Sorry to say goodbye.

I enjoyed using SubEthaEdit and I think if you are about to plop down a large chunk of change for BBedit, then at $35, this is a better deal. But if you are a non-commercial (i.e, individual or academic user) that just needs a basic unix text editor, it is simply no longer worth it. There are many free alternatives, such as Smultron, TextWrangler, vim, emacs, gvim, xemacs, aqua-emacs, kate, kedit, gedit, pico, nano, etc. etc. and even TextEdit. I'm also finding it is dead easy to make your own. Still, I am sorry to say goodbye, as it has some nice features, apart from the collaborative rendezvous features (which I don't need).

It'd be nice if they could've mentioned that it's no longer free for non-commercial use. I'll be sticking with 2.2 from now on, I guess. $35 for a text editor is a little steep for my tastes.

I use SEE all the time. The collaborative features are what truly drives this product for me. I cannot count the times where I have been working on a particular programming task and there is just some bug I cannot see with just my set of eyes. I let another person look, and it is fixed instantaneously! The extensibility of SEE is also a boon. I sometimes have to program is weird, esoteric languages (sometimes of my own devising) and it is nice to be able to customize the syntax highlighting so easily!
I do not understand people complaining about the background watermark at all... It only comes up when you don't use the program for a while. Do people really give you dirty look s or something? Why not just buy it if the picture is too much for you. I highly appreciate the free price tag.
