60 gig with SERIOUS media damage in the critical area of the drive (boot sectors, directory structures, etc). Norton wouldn't even see the disk. DiskWarrior (an outstanding product regardless) could not rebuild the directory. Total Recall's Virtual Lab could see the drive, but would NOT scan it on any setting. I was about to give up. I downloaded the demo and the scan showed me all my files with folder structure intact. I recoved one file to test it. Worked perfectly. Then I purchased it to unlock the recovery of all my other files. Got back about 10 Gigs worth of data ( it missed about 15 files out of 4325 because of the media damage). You've got nothing to lose by d/l the demo if you have major drive trouble and need to recover. And at $89 it's thousands less than sending your drive off to some expensive recovery company.

Rescue via the link ProSoft Engineering provided and accessed it with the serial number they emailed me. I was blown away by the power of that application. I had a "dead" IBM Deskstar 61 GB HD with about 59 GB of information on it - much of which was sound and photo files. (Many of the photo files were taken with a digital camera and downloaded to my hard drive). The HD had not been backed up in a long time - I hope I've learned my lesson - so I was in a bit of a panic. I tried replacing the circuit board with another identical HD; I tried Disk Warrior; I tried Anubis Utility; I tried VST SoftRaid (the driver loaded on the HD); I tried several shareware "volume mounters," and - of course - Mac OS Drive Setup. The best I could do was get some of those applications to recognize that the HD at least existed, but in each of those cases (Drive Setup, SoftRaid, Anubis Utility) the applications informed me I needed to initialize the HD. One of the volume mounters called Mount Everything at least identified bad sectors, although it couldn't do anything with them. Anubis tried to help, but couldn't "read the driver descriptor at block 0" - whatever that means. Anubis also tried to scan the HD and move bad sectors, but kept locking up. Disk Warrior is great for rebuilding and optimizing a working HD, but didn't even recognize my "dead" one. I was resolved to accepting the fact that I was going to lose the files because I didn't want to spend several hundred dollars by sending it off to have the stuff extracted. Then I discovered Disk Rescue. What a deal! The program was so user friendly I didn't even have to read any instructions before putting it to work. It took a while - 59 GB of info is a lot to extract - but it found EVERYTHING!

saved me on 2 occasions; once when I deleted a volume while re-creating the only backup set for that volume---I got everything back as far as I could tell. And on another occasion, the driver for the internal drive of my iMac got corrupted so none of the volumes on it could be mounted by any means. I had backups from a couple of days earlier, so 'Data Rescue' here got me all the files that had not been backed up since then. 'Data Rescue' is an major update of the shareware utility first released by WildBits in 1997. Both DR 3.0.2 Legacy and DR Classic 4.0.1 will run under Mac OS 8.6-9.2.2, while DR 3.0.2 Legacy is $50 cheaper it is 68k native so it is slower than DR Classic 4.0.1 which is Power PC native, and DR Classic has a more 'modern' user interface. This speed difference can matter a lot---my 40 GB drive on my 600 MHz iMac took about 5 hours to scan with DR 3.0.0 Legacy. Another difference is that you can get a refund on the Classic version but not on the Legacy version---although both have demo versions. Also there are 3 different kinds of licence available for the Classic version.
