Product Description:

ProtoFont is a tool to browse fonts in or out of the System Folder to quickly find the perfect font for a graphic design job, and to automatically create font library specimen sheets. Any number of fonts may be selected for comparison with your own sample text, making ProtoFont a fast and powerful tool for exploring logotype and headline design possibilities. Font keyword database, keyboard maps, character set charts, select fonts by matching text, select from numerous sample text blocks.

What's new in this version:

  • Browse fonts not installed in System Folder
  • Merge additional font folders into a font set database
  • New floating toolbar for browsing
  • Keyboard shortcuts for browsing.
  • Updated for OS 9.
  • Better printing of multi-font layouts.
  • Corrected spelling in menu items and window titles.
  • Minor fixes to electronic manual.
  • Fonts can be deleted from the Font List or Font Keywords window
  • The Merge command in the File menu now only adds the new font folder, not including System fonts if they're not already there.
  • TrueType fonts not installed in the System are now properly displayed when selected in Font List or Font Keywords window. To print TrueType fonts, they must be installed in the System.

all sub-folders) can be loaded into the ProtoFont font list from anywhere without dragging fonts into your System folder. Simply choose the Merge command and pick the folder. dznr's obsolete comment refers to an older version. Also, ProtoFont's focus is on spec sheets and sample text variations.

this app is it can only show you fonts that are active, so if you are counting on this as your main font utility, you'll still be dragging fonts in and out of the system folder (no OS X support here).

does one thing, and it doesn't even do that so well. Costs too much -- $50, versus $90 for FontReserve, a full-featured font utility. No OS X support. Overall, simply not worth anyone's time, not even the developer's.
