But now that Carrara and Hexagon have been purchased by DAZ, they'll just be toys like the rest of the DAZ-ware. Moving on...

Carrara ReviewFantastic all-around 3D - Version: 5.0.2, 1/20/2006 05:24PM PST

Carrara has really been shaping up to be a capable and feature-rich application for 3D stills and animation; and one for a very reasonable price. The latest release does not disappoint with a much cleaner interface and the addition of complex modeling functions (among other things!).

One seemingly overlooked addition in this release is the inclusion of a library of excellent looking shaders. In terms of rendering quality, Carrara has impressive speed and fantastic results.

My only major gripe is the speed of manipulating rigged characters. As you start to get towards some high-end models it can slow down much more than I would have expected. I will keep experimenting though!

Carrara ReviewFor the price, it's hard to beat! - Version: 5.0, 12/6/2005 05:02PM PST

Carrara 5 is a great step forward for the product line. I have been playing with the product for some time now (in beta), and I will have to say that I am very happy with the new features and changes.

The two biggest complaints I have are that the documentation needs a serious updating (some chapters haven't been updated sense version 3), and they decided to leave out the planned support for camera mapping in this version. Bummer :(

Beyond that I think Carrara provided the best price/performance balance of the 3D apps currently available. I have virtually all the others 3D apps (Maya, MotionBuilder, C4D, Lightwave, Electric Image, 3D Invigorator, Modo and so on) for the Mac. But when I need it done fast with good visual quality my go-to 3D app now is Carrara.

I tested Carrara 5 Pro on a Dual 2Ghz G5 with 2.5GB RAM and ATI 9800 Pro, along with 2 AMD PC render nodes running across a Gigabit network.

With version 5, this program has evolved into an indespensible tool in my studio. Whether I'm creating for print, web or broadcast, the ease of this program and speed of rendering is awesome (especially the network rendering). I've been able to do photorealistic "photo shoots" for clients that don't have product ready to use by importing their CAD files yet can just as easily make the same image look like a napkin scketch. Nice stuff.

Not only is the price on Carrara extremely reasonable for all it's power, but top notch plug-ins for this product are so inexpensive it's astonishing.

Excellent program, and much faster with the recent update.

Professional level results from renderer, but I use formZ for modeling.

Great 3-D program. Wish there was a 3-D Modeling w/Carrara for 3-D challenged desgners though. I still cut three times to get one good one, even though I measure everything 3 times too.

Carrara ReviewGotta say I like this program.... - Version: 3.0.3, 12/20/2003 02:22PM PST

A fine 3D programs but not without problems. Simple but non-standard interface sure looks good but at times can be counter intuitive. Does not have near the power of Maya but much easier to use and access features. Everything you need to model, paint, animate and render a project. No network rendering but at least multi-thread so it place nice when rendering in the background. Sometime lethargic rendering.

This is a nice, easy package for the beginner 3D artist..that still has enough power to grow into.

Carrara Commentary*Another* Upgrade? - Version: 3.0.3, 12/20/2003 12:33PM PST

Isn't it only something like 2 or 3 weeks since they came out with 3.0.1 and now we're up to 3.0.3? Yet the list of "new features" for 3.0.1, 3.0.2. and 3.0.3. has remained constant.

While I'm glad to see it's getting some attention and the upgrades have improved the stability, I do wonder why the sudden flurry of upgrades - specifically what did 3.0.1 and 3.0.2 break that they've needed to fix in 3.0.3?

Stability still leaves something to be desired, though - my very first run of 3.0.3, rendering a couple of the sample scenes from the scene wizard, and it crashes and burns when I try to quit.
