Apple Aperture CommentaryAn Apple oversight - Version: 2.1.3, 4/15/2009 03:07PM PST

After downloading this update, doing a "Get Info" on the Aperture application still returns version 2.1.2 on my machine. But when I open the app, the splash screen shows 2.1.3.

Uncharacteristic oversight by Team Apple.

Oops, on a whim I decided to perform a "Quit Finder" and upon restarting the Finder I see "Get Info" now shows version 2.1.3. So the problem was on my end...late '08 MBP slow to update its database.

I used both aperture and lightroom, IMHO aperture is the most professional and versatile app I ever used.

The update won't install. It says there is no copy of Aperture installed. Readers on the Apple discussion forums have reported this problem when Aperture has been moved from the default location in /Applications, but mine IS in the default location.

Apple Aperture CommentaryAperture 2.x Stability - Version: 2.1, 3/28/2008 05:13PM PST

When I try to import complete folders, after a few minutes of running the entire system will lockup. The clock freezes, and the system is hosed. Hard reboot is required, Microsoft Windows style. I don't think I've come across another program for a few years that has managed to do that on the Mac. So why does it have to be an Apple program?

I've also managed to crash Aperture 2.0 and 2.1 from just importing images from a folder. In this situation it's manages to just crash the application itself and not Leopard.

At this time, Aperture has been removed from my system, and I'm a little irritated with Apple for not doing the necessary testing before it releases it's software. This recently happened with the Lightroom team and their 1.4 release, and I hope both learn their lesson.

I REALLY want to like this program. It's so much more advanced as a platform that Lightroom, but Lightroom has managed to run for a year now without crashing once (even though it's development is rather painfully sluggish).

For me "stability" is more important than a great looking application that's frozen on the screen. Aperture has great promise with it's platform, but if it's greater integration into the operating system means harder system wide crashes, then STAY CLEAR of this this stuff!

Apple Aperture ReviewHead and shoulders above lightroom - Version: 2.0.1, 3/14/2008 01:59AM PST

I used lightroom till I started trying Aperture. Now I think there are only a few small things that are better/ I like more than in Aperture. Those are exclusive picture correction tools like "noise correction" and the gradation curve. Maybe these things become integrated by Apple one day.

Over all in my opinion Aperture is the more professional and effective tool.

Apple Aperture ReviewMuch Improved over Version 1.5 - Version: 2.0, 2/29/2008 08:39AM PST

In general I had no problems installing the Demo on a Mac Pro 2x3 Ghz Dual Core Xenon with 4 GB and OS 10.5.2. I renamed version 1.5 and left it sitting. I did not touch my original library file. I did import almost a thousand photos, Raw, Tiff and Jpeg. Response seems much better when browsing. Converting for external editor (Photoshop CS3 or Lightzone) seems faster as well.

I have the full retail version on order and am looking forward to leaving iphoto behind and using Aperture exclusively for DAM.

Apple Aperture Troubleshooting ReportAperture 2 will not quit - Version: 2.0, 2/25/2008 02:09PM PST

After installation V2 I launched and got the eternal beach ball. This was a clean install- i had 1.5 but it was academic and had to get retail and install over it. I have been unable to use the application. Can't update vault. Beach Ball spins forever. Can't even QUIT. Tried trashing prefs, uninstalled and reinstalled. No luck. I am not sure what to do. I tried changing library location. When I re-link to new location the apps closes, however, next launch brings back same problem. Will not quit. Checked permissions, all ok. Apple tech support said it's my OS and wanted me to reinstall my OS (10.4.11). Don't think so. Was going to upgrade to 10.5 but saw some printer and scanner problems and decide to wait. I use a Epson 1280 and a Canon scanner, both of which have life left.

Apple Aperture CommentaryWARNING: NO UPGRADE TO ACADEMIC LICENSES! - Version: 2.0, 2/22/2008 08:21AM PST

I purchased the Aperture 2 upgrade, and then discovered the hard way that it can't be used with an academic license for Aperture 1.5. (Yeah, I missed the fine print.) Which means that the financial savings of buying the academic version for version 1 is MORE THAN OFFSET by the additional cost of buying version 2 outright with no upgrade (even at academic the price).

Nice move, Apple. Offer a discount to academic users, then punish them for taking it. Way to build loyalty.
