Total Immersion Racing ReviewThey Blew it big time. :( - Version: 1.0.2, 6/4/2005 12:32PM PST

matt38_dotmac
I have found this to be true for two titles from Feral software so far. This and Enemy Engaged. The games recognize every device I have connected. My CH Products F-16 Combat Stick USB, my CH Products Pro Throttle USB and my CH Products Pro Pedals. But they only let me use one of the devices for control during game play. For an aircraft as complicated to fly as a Helicopter this is utterly rediculous. I've played much lower end sims that allow the use of multiple devices. It seems necessary for any flight sim. Why they would only allow the use of one controller is beyond me. You would want to have your flight Stick or steering wheel if you have one as the analog steering control and your pedals as the analog gas and brake. Lets face it, for a driving game to really be any good it has to give you comfortable and famialr analog control of Steering, Gas and Brake. But NO. You must pick one controller to use. Not all three. What kind of Crap is that. I hope they wake up and smell the coffee and fix this with an update. It could be cool but with the control options being what they are it's total crap.

Zonic Support
If you install Total Immersion Racing 1.0.2 (released in July 2004) you should find an app called 'Input Calibrator' in your 'Total Immersion Racing' folder. You can use this app to fine tune the calibration of your controllers (check the Input Calibrator ReadMe for further details)

If you experience any problems with TIR, please get in touch with us at <tirsupport AT zonic.co.uk>

Total Immersion Racing ReviewTotal Immersion Racing - Version: 1.0.1, 5/9/2004 05:04PM PST

I bought this game when I purchased a new Dual 2.0 G5, upgraded with a Radeon 9800 Pro (retail) and a 23" Cinema Display. I also purchased a Logitch Wingman Force Feedback wheel.

Racing sims for the Mac are few and far between so it pleases me to no end what a brilliant piece of work Total Immersion Racing is. The game play, graphics, sounds and action are fantastic and this runs up there with some of the best PC games I've played. My only gripe with the game itself (and TIR isn't the only racing sim afflicted) is the lack of damage from hitting objects or other cars making the action more arcade like than simulation. None-the-less the game is a MUST HAVE for any Mac fan with fast enough CPU and a love for racing.

One word of warning for any ATI 9800 Pro users. Using ATI's control panel to turn on the FSAA, Anisotropic Filterning or Vertical Sync will cause the game and the entire system to crash. Repeatedly. It looks beautiful while it lasts and the game is still playable on my equipment in full screen mode (1920x1200) with the Radeon settings at medium but it's impossible to get more than 4-5 laps. Turn it off.

Total Immersion Racing ReviewNeeds calibration! - Version: 1.0, 1/9/2004 05:02PM PST

I also bought the game last month and have played for a time using a Logitech Wingman Formula Force GP (which, btw, works great on the PS2 with GT3--cool!). I find this game more difficult to drive than GT3 for 2 reasons:
1, frame rates are very choppy. But my current system is a powerbook and just barely meets minimum requirements (just waiting for the speed-bumped G5s to come out and things will be a bit different!).
2, It's VERY annoying not to have calibration control over the steering wheel. It tends to get off a bit so centering the wheel causes drift to the left. Some sort of basic calibration tool would really help here. I also find steering very twitchy, but again this might come down to the system I'm playing on currently.

This aside, I'm really enjoying the racing. The AI is much better than GT3 in that the other drivers get really pissed at you if you cut them off (I assume it'll only get worse as you progress through the game). Tracks are great and very challenging, and even at lowest settings it's a pretty game. Hopefully it'll be even nicer when I can see it at hi-rez!

Total Immersion Racing ReviewCOULD BE!!!! - Version: 1.0, 1/9/2004 04:40PM PST

The game could be SOOO Tight!!! But using any gamepads the game is unplayable!!! The car always goes to the left for me, and people are right!! No way to calibrate the device!!! If the car wouldn't go to the left so much I could handle the steering....Please fix that...

Otherwise the game experience seems pretty good!!

Total Immersion Racing ReviewMy 2 cents - Version: 1.0, 1/8/2004 10:42AM PST

I've purchased the Game and after you get a few things straight it's an absolute blast to race! I still hope there will be a patch to address the performance of this app. Running on a Dual 1GHz with 1.5GB of RAM and a GeForce4 mx with 64MBs of vRAM, the default settings were still a bit choppy and when you're dropping frames your car control becomes twitchy at best. This may also happen because I have 2 monitors so each monitor only gets to use 32MBs of vRAM.
What worked for me is to switch the view you drive with. The default chase view runs way too slow but the incar and front bumper view work quite well and I haven't noticed any problems with my LogitechMOMO Force Feedback wheel. Although I've only raced in a field of 6 cars so far. I still leave the Environment mapping and Shadows to none but I turned the detail and Visual Range to the maximum setting.

I should also mention that the driving style of this game is not like GT3, NASCAR or F1. Instead it is more similar to "Jarret & Labonte Stock Car Racing" for the PS1 and "Pro Race Driver" for the PS2. If you enjoy racing either of those then you'll dig this one for sure! The racing in TIR feels just like those incar cameras as seen on speed TV in British Touring Car racing.

Last thing I should mention is that I kept getting an error message but their tech support team was very responsive and promised a patch in the future. The work around for now is to make sure that none of your mounted hard drives contains the word "data". Similar to the problem with Age of Mythology.

Total Immersion Racing ReviewControls are totaly unusable - Version: 1.0, 12/8/2003 06:25PM PST

Do they not test this game with game pads, wheels etc. The force feedback jumps all over the place with my Gravis Xterminator and even with the FF turned off the steering is very jerky.

Sherw1n: I had the same when the option 'Environment mapping" was turned on. Turning it off made the cars look good again, but it seems like a bug to me.

The car models (2 available in the demo) look good but when you choose either one and race, they look flat and washed out. Is it cause it's a demo? Ran it on a 1.8 G5 with visual options turned all the way up. Anybody else seeing this?

Worked fine with my Playstation2 Gran Turismo steering wheel (basically a rebranded Logitech Wingman Formula Force GP). Including the force feedback.
Only downside is that there is no way to calibrate your steering wheel. Hopefully the full version includes some tool to do this (like with Nascar 2003).

The game itself is pretty addictive. Looks are good, but needs a real fast mac. On my P12" 1Ghz powerbook it had troubles when the other cars are real close. This was in all but the lowest graphic settings, but even with these settings the game looks good.

Definitely worth downloading the demo.
