Apple Security Update CommentaryAll OK here - Version: 2008-007, 10/12/2008 03:09PM PST

Installed without issue on G4 iBook and on G5 DP PPC. Restart on the G5 DP seems noticeably snappier, too.

Any more updates and they'll have to call it 10.4.12.

Apple Security Update Troubleshooting ReportCauses Safari 3.1.2 to hang requiring force quit - Version: 2008-006, 10/5/2008 11:41AM PST

This update seems to cause Safari 3.1.2 to hang upon loading some pdfs, requiring a forced quit. Hangs are unpredictable but frequent. After installation, numerous permission needed correcting, which did not mitigate the Safari problem. Neither did clearing the Safari preferences plist.

Warning: consult the message boards before you install!

Apple Security Update Review"Your network settings have been changed by another application" - Version: 2008-006, 9/25/2008 11:43AM PST

VERY BAD UPDATE. DO NOT INSTALL.

If you have not already installed "Security Update 2008-006," DO NOT INSTALL IT, especially if you are using a laptop and change "Locations" often! Thousands and thousands of OS X 10.4.11 users are finding it impossible to use the Network preference pane after applying this update. There is no fix from Apple at this time, and although there are some work-arounds. Mostly it breaks your system.

VERY BAD UPDATE. DO NOT INSTALL.

Apple Security Update CommentarySecurity Update 2008-006 Network problem? - Version: 2008-006, 9/16/2008 12:12PM PST

G4 dual 500 10.4.11

I run Applejack (in SUM mode) prior to any updates... install update, run Applejack again and restart. After updating '006' when I go to System Pref's - Network - immediately a window pops up saying "Your network settings have been changed by another application"
Clicking 'OK' just pops it back up again.

Have to quickly quit System Pref.'s after OK'ing the alert.

Anyone else seeing this?

Apple Security Update CommentarySHA-1 digest doesn't match download - Version: 2008-006, 9/16/2008 04:46AM PST

shimabkt
The "SecUpd2008-006PPC.dmg" file I downloaded from: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/securityupdate2008006clientppc.html

does not match its SHA1 digest that is supposed to be:
61898bf315d04958aaf487bb92ba257d059a33ce

Instead I get an SHA1 from the terminal of:
7b3aed47dbad3d55d90d093a6fb7a81c34c22a2c

Can anyone corroborate my findings? Amusing that a security update download wouldn't match its posted SHA-1 digest.

I totally agree. It's almost like Apple has lost it's creative edge or they lost most of their good programmers. It almost seems like a bunch of kids are writing their software now by trial and error. Just letting it loose on the public to see what happens. The only fix for the QuickTime 7.5 screw up is a Pacifist downgrade or an archive install. Still no update or word about that from Apple, a hand full of people claim that it worked for them. I'm thinking that it messes with Tiger more than Leopard, and since there's no more money to be made on Tiger, why should they care, arrogant %$#%#%

As for their Security updates, I've really never had a problem with them. Just repair permissions before and after. I think I will start doing the clone thing. That sounds like a very wise thing to do.

By the way, anyone 34 and under is a kid to me.

Well I learned my lesson big time with the QuickTime 7.5 update nightmare. From now on, I do a smart clone using SuperDuper to my slave drive, on ANY update Apple puts out.

That way I can clone it back to a usable system if things go wrong, and everything that they put out , something is wrong with it. At best you get a mixed bag, some good fixes along with new bugs.

Do yourself a favor, do a SuperDuper smart clone with back up all files, before any Apple update.
Repair permissions before and after their updates.

Don't jump on an update and install it right away. Wait and see what others have to say first on macfixit.com and other blogs. Give it a week or so. What's the rush. I know, I was an instant update junkie too. You need to get that monkey off your back, it's hard, but we're pullin for ya.

If this is not sound advice, then I don't know what is.

Apple Security Update Troubleshooting ReportApple Mail & Printing - Version: 2008-004, 7/17/2008 01:39AM PST

Hello,

a couple of days ago, I needed to print out several html formatted email messages.

20 out of 60 emails were not printed correctly. My printer did print a blank page. Only the email headers appeared on my printouts. The other 40 prints did work fine.

I just do not understand why some pages were not printed correctly and other pages on the other hand did work fine. This described problem appeared in a very "fuzzy" way.

I have printed some of the email messages again and it did work fine. Other "second tries" on the other did not work. The hell knows why.

I clicked the "Preview" button in my print dialog box and printed the email message from the Apple "Preview" application. (Just to get a "real" preview and to make sure the message and the entire layout of my email message appears correctly).

Very annoying and a waste of paper!
