Product Description:

PuzzleGetter is an incredibly simple program to do one, and only one, thing. It it a utility used to download various crosswords (National Post, LA Times, Cross Canada, CrosSynergy, and more) with a single mouse click. The puzzles (saved in Across Lite format -- .puz) are then saved into a folder of your choice (default is the desktop) in an appropriately named file, such as NP_5-14-2003.puz (for a National Post crossword downloaded on May 14, 2003), where the prefix names the source of the puzzle, and the rest of the name shows the date it was downloaded. To view the files that are downloaded, you must have an AcrossLite compatible crossword reading application (freely available).

What's new in this version:

  • - added a user chosen default download folder; not just saved to the desktop anymore!
  • puzzles can now be saved so that their default opening application is the freeware "Across Lite OS X" application (as found in the "readers" section)
  • removed the USA Today crossword, as they are now distributing it in Flash format, not Across Lite. Bug the folks at USA Today if you want them to continue the Across Lite format.
  • fixed problem with CrossCanada download (was getting puzzle from a previous week instead of the current puzzle)
  • fixed problem with Sydney Morning Herald download that made the puzzle inaccessible on Saturday's

This very simple app has been updated, but you must go to the developer's site to find the separate versions for 10.3 and 10.4. The Post link is still nonfunctional, but that's the Post's doing, not the developer's. Within its limitations, this is a wonderful app.

PuzzleGetter Reviewit feeds my obsession!!! - Version: 0.8, 7/28/2005 03:11AM PST

I've used this app for over a year and a half, and its ratio of usefulness and satisfaction to simplicity is absolutely through the roof!! It that saves me a ton of time waiting for web pages to load, slower downloads, often needing to rename files in more detail, or the worst, having to print->save as .pdf which is REALLY tedious! PuzzleGetter has turned a casual interest in solving crossword puzzles to exercise my brain into a full-time hobby that I maintain daily!! (My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy).

Despite the ingeniousness of the initial idea, however, the program is long due for an update. It's probably optimistic to imagine that the developer has been working on an update for over two years, but I like my mom's motto--you never know what you might get if you don't ask! So, as a devoted puzzler, here's a couple of suggestions that would greatly improve functionality and appeal.

First of all, I've found five different daily/weekly crosswords out on the Web that I enjoy doing in addition to the ones I get from PuzzleGetter, but I have to download them from their individual sites if I want to save them for later instead of doing them in my browser. It would be awesome if they could be added to the application, just say the word and I'll give out a list!

Perhaps due to the lengthy dry spell since any updates, puzzles from The National Post button no longer captures a file format MacXWord can recognize and I have yet to find another way to open them.

Last but not least, the ultra-simple interface has so little information about the puzzles it can be hard to remember if any of them are cryptics (I think the Sunday Cape Cod is but I rarely remember to check on a Sunday), which I hate doing, and a difficulty rating wouldn't hurt, and maybe an index of which puzzles are posted on more than one website. I've started a puzzle that seemed awfully easy and realized I'd done it before without knowing where!

Excellent. Now I just need to set up a cron task to run it daily.
