Product Description:

Moo stands for Mac OS Optimizer [for X]. It's main purpose is to make the most of your system for better performance. This application is useful for older machines that want that speed boost or those newer machines that want X to use more of their RAM.

The Xoptimize section uses an Apple provided command line tool to optimize the loading time of applications. It will also make applications execute faster immediately after startup as the application will spend less time dynamically looking up and binding with various libraries and frameworks.

This application is free so check it out!

[the name has changed from Moo X to Moo because of name conflicts]

What's new in this version:

  • Removed all UI associated with memory usage. Apple fixed a bug in the update_prebinding tool such that it now recycles memory correctly (at least, the release notes indicate such). In tests, update_prebinding never consumed more than 200mb of virtual memory and rarely more than 10mb of real memory. While 200mb sounds like a lot, it is not unreasonable given the nature of the whole prebinding process.
  • Removed all command line args passed to the dowithredirect shell script; they are no longer necessary.
  • Fixed bug that prevented app from working if it was placed within a folder that had any non-7bit-ASCII characters in the path (for example: ƒ). Though it isn't documented, the AuthorizationExecuteWithPrivileges() function takes a UTF8 argument for the path to the executable to be executed. In theory, the same is true of the arguments, but there was no need to go there in this context.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.2
  • Mac OS X 10.1

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.1 or higher

Moo CommentaryIt's disappeared - Version: 1.0, 6/8/2004 12:11AM PST

Moo has suffered a fate similar to XOptimize's, the app it copied: it's no longer available on Versiontracker, and not from many web pages that link to it--their links are dead. Don't know where to find it. However, other current utils like Cocktail, etc. do prebinding. XOptimize, if you were curious to take a look at it, I found buried at http://www.codefab.com/unsupported/, where for some reason it's referred to as both version 0.1 and 0.42. You'll find other web references to a 1.0 version, and even a 1.0.1 version--even Bill Bumgarner, its author, refers to a 1.0 version--but the last version was 0.1, as shown in its About window, and by doing a Get Info on it from the Finder.

is also irrelevant in Jaguar, because OSX 10.2 uses it by default.
